I'm supposed to be a professional now. How does that work?

So I've been poking around craigslist looking for art type gigs and stuff and generally having zero luck until someone finally answered one of my e-mails in a group message to everyone who replied. I'm pretty sure they wanted illustrations for a children's book.

Hi, I guess I needed to be more specific when I placed my ad. I already have offers from Dorrance Publishing to publish my book for $6,500.00. I DON"T have that kind of money nor is the book illustrated and it costs more for the illustrations. I am looking for someone who has always wanted to get something published that will work a deal with me for proceeds from the book at a 70-30 split. Not $25 a picture or page or $100 an hour. If I had that kind of money I would go with a publishing house. I need someone to help me get the book finished with illustrations so it can be submitted as a complete book. Both of us will be named in the book as well as both parties being involved in the publishing contract. This deal is for a partnership of sorts to get published. For all of you that are already published, congrats, but your prices are too high. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please respond back and I will send you examples of what I drew as the main charachters and we can go from there.

I honestly can't decide if I should still try to work with this person for that. So, I get money IF the book sells, and until then I work for free? Somehow that doesn't really sound like a good deal to me, even if the percentage was more than 30. I guess I don't know how this kind of stuff normally works, but judging by the response, there are other people that do, and are charging money up front. Which only makes sense.

Maybe I should just go for it. At the very least it will give me something to do that's art related, and maybe it might get my name out somewhere? Though I don't want to end up being pegged as just a children's book illustrator. And it just seems like I could very well be working for nothing, and I don't know how to deal with people as a professional illustrator. I wouldn't even know what to tell them or ask for, since I'm only used to working with customers with simple, nerdy needs and no intention to use my art as anything other than a decoration. Urrrrgh, what do I doooo?

i fail, work?, illustration, halp, craigslist
