I think the bite must have been painful, the jaws are strong. How did it happen?

This summer I haven´t seen many butterflies here. There is still hope...

I was busy photographing the dragonfly and didn't know anything until I found my hand pouring with blood. The horsefly must have come in, had a chomp and got away again. Didn't even feel it which was odd as the one I got on my arm a few weeks ago was really painful and I knew it had done it immediately.

What a beauty! I had a few distant glimpses of Southern hawkers yesterday, but none of them were going to land for me...

The horseflies seem to be particularly bad this year. When I'm out on horseback, I spend the entire ride slapping them - but more keep arriving. And they can bite through jodphurs. Nasty beasties.
