Sparrows were a big part of my growing up in the country. We seem to have done terrible things to them in the UK with modern agriculture / building practices so they've ended up on the RSPB Red List. The council estate I walk through on my way home from work provides a perfect place for nesting under the roof tiles (sparrows like to be sociable) ( Read more... )

The old houses in the village provide good nesting. The sparrows used to roost in the Christmas tree, bought with roots for my first Christmas and brought in every Christmas until it grew too tall about 15 years later. They were noisy little lodgers but we didn't mind. It was about 60 years old when a winter gale pushed it sideways and I thought it might be best to have it chopped down. I regret that now as there are far fewer sparrows around now. I do have a pair that nest in the hole the exhaust pipe from my boiler comes out of the house as does every other house on the hill with a boiler upstairs.

When I used to ride down through the village on a Sunday morning, I used to love hearing the chirp of sparrows under the eaves of the old cottages - such a cheerful sound.

Fantastic pictures - especially that first one.

That was my lovely Kodak which unfortunately met with an accident last week. I have a new fuji being delivered to work tomorrow and hope it will be as decent.

Wonderful photos!
Well, I am a proud owner and supporter of a big colony of sparrows! They live under my roof literally - their nests are just under the tiles and they occupy the front part where a window of my bedroom is. You can imagine the noise...and the mess. They keep bringing (and losing) feathers, twigs, straw or hay or pieces of textile and I have to clean this all the time from underneath. But I love these brave and noisy birds! They really live in a close community and they seem to have a hierarchy of positions. There are always guards watching and annoying Oliver but my cat has given up hunting them.
I feed my sparrows every day, I give them 2 old bread rolls every day and they are able to eat them during a morning. Of course there are noisy quarrels and sometimes fights - I suspect with "foreign" sparrows. Other birds don´t dare to even try get something!
Well...and there is guano on the ground too:-)
