I went for a long walk today in my lovely new walking boots which are so comfortable that I don't want to take them off. This is a very big improvement on the normal situation as I have really wierd feet and short ankles and getting anything moderately comfortable is extremely hard. We've watched these two young swans nest not too successfully for a couple of years and then they got a better site this year. Mrs Swan seemed to be sitting forever (the photo was taken mid-May) but then tonight, with the help of a decent zoom, I managed to spot the proud parents with their three cygnets.

Sparrows were a big part of my growing up in the country. We seem to have done terrible things to them in the UK with modern agriculture / building practices so they've ended up on the RSPB Red List. The council estate I walk through on my way home from work provides a perfect place for nesting under the roof tiles (sparrows like to be sociable) ( Read more... )

Unlike puddleshark I don't get much access to interesting not-flat countryside. Over Easter I went back to Northumberland for a couple of days and got out to see some hills.

garienos and I went for a drive up the coast at the weekend while the weather was decent. We went hunting a local Holy Well (more on that later) but also saw the massed goose flocks on the marshes at Holkham.

Living in a flat above shops, and near the sea, I am right in the middle of in a colony of breeding seagulls. At the moment all the roofs around are covered in nests and squeaky gull chicks and VERY NOISY parents who do not like me or the hamster. garienos always has nests under the eaves of his house and having gone round and counted he's got about 14 this year. I collected some of the egg shells that had been thrown out by the parent birds when their little ones had hatched to try and photograph them. I didn't realise they are so tiny.
