The moment Junno saw him board, he knew this flight would bring him something more than special.

"Welcome aboard, Sir", he greeted with eyes and a whole face full of merry.

"Thank you", the passenger replied, flaunting solid cheekbones, sharp eyes and full lips that all gave Junno's heart a jump-start.

When it was time for flight attendants to make their final safety checks before takeoff, Junno was assigned to his eye candy customer and so, in a not too subtle special care, he actually bent over to personally check if the seat belt was fastened.

From the boarding pass rested on the seat tray, Junno quickly learnt that his eye candy’s name was Ueda Tatsuya.

And with a contented smile, Junno took his seat, feeling as though floating high in the sky as the plane took off in the light shade of blue that cloaked the atmosphere that was also dotted with tuffs of white clouds.

On that short flight from Narita to Kagoshima, the day was already pleasant.

At snack time, Junno could hardly wait to serve Tatsuya, "Can I get you anything to drink, Mr Ueda?"

Much surprised and impressed, wondering if perhaps flight attendants usually learn passengers' names, Tatsuya kindly nodded at the gesture, "Orange juice would be fine".

There wasn’t much chance for them to interact more because soon, Tatsuya fell asleep and never woke up until just before landing.

At the door, just before disembarking, Junno smiled at him and said, “I hope you had a good rest”.

Tatsuya again nodded, but this time, he shared a pleasant smile that gave Junno dancing butterflies.
.
.

Now that Tatsuya was in Kagoshima, he realised that he hadn't planned anything except for booking the hotel. It was just that he felt as though he needed a break from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo for the day so he chose somewhere far away. Hungry, he was walking around town checking the wait line for restaurants and that’s when he nearly collides into someone else.

“How’s the birthday going?”

When Tatsuya looked up to the speaker, and noticed it’s the flight attendant, he masked his surprised with a smile and asked, “How did you know it’s my birthday?”

Junno returnd the smile, “It says so on your boarding pass”.

Tatsuya actually did chuckle, replying with, “That’s neat but if you’re going to celebrate my birthday then how about a free flight?”

Junno laughed wholesome this time, his eyes crinkled and his teeth showing, “Drop that thought in the suggestion box next time you fly”.

“So you’re basically saying you’re of no help”.

“Pretty much so”, Junno answered, loving how they’ve both fallen into rapport at a comfortable pace, “After all, I’m just a meagre flight attendant”.

“Then what can you do?” Tatsuya raised a daring eyebrow and waited.

Junno took the cue, “Let’s take a walk”.

It was raining light enough for them to skip along the damped sidewalk without scurrying from being wet. It was only dusk but being October, evenings made time seem a lot later with streetlights and vehicle lights already on and flashing on the wet street making it seem like a disco ball mirage.

And as they came to a stop at a traffic light Tatsuya asked, “You’re not going to kidnap me, are you?”

“Not yet”, Junno chuckled, motioning for them to run across the road.

Tatsuya quickly ran across, “You really are dangerous”, but even so he still followed Junno behind the main road and down some smaller winding side streets dimly lit by the lighting from some old traditional buildings that Tatsuya soon noted were tiny restaurants.

“Not many people around here, uh?” his eyes wandered all over, the place still quaintly Japanese but out in the countryside, the ambience felt like something new though not far removed from the type of escape he was hoping for and before he even noticed, they’d entered one of the small restaurants.

At the sound of the chime, a lady wearing an apron came to the front, “Oh, Taguchi”, she greeted with a smile so wide in her surprise, “You’re back. How long has it been?”

It was clear that Junno was a regular, “About 6 months, I think”, affectionately squeezing the hand she gave to him, “Sit anywhere?”

“Yes, your usual corner table is free”, she smiled, then looking at Tatsuya who suddenly became aware of being inspected.

“He’s just a friend”, Junno gave her a reprimanding look though his eyes were playful.

“I didn’t say anything”, she giggled.

“Yeah, but we both know you were thinking it”.

“A little”, she laughed then pointing to the menu, “Same?”

“Yeah”.

“And for your friend?” and she did make sure to put much emphasis on friend.

Junno rolled his eyes at her but still couldn't contain his smile, "Tatsuya, I recommend pho and the goi cuon spring roll. It's all authentic Vietnamese food".

Tatsuya gives the okay and as soon she left, he sat looking at Junno with an inquisitive smile.

Junno looked up, saw him and immediately busted out in a quiet laughter, “So what do you want to know?”

“So you’re a regular here, huh?”

Still smiling, Junno nodded, browsing the menu for no reason, “Is that really your question?”

“Well, from the looks of things it seems like it will be the first of many”.

When the drinks came, Junno gestured for toast saying, “Well if that’s how you want to spend your birthday”.

Like that, the night pedaled away and with the drizzle outside and the autumn temperature, not only was the restaurant cosy but also intimate with just a few tables. They drank and laughed and shared the food on each other’s plate - it was the scene of two people who had known each other all their life.

To end dinner, Junno surprised Tatsuya with a serving of sweet banana soup with sago pearls and coconut milk. But one spoonful was enough for him know that Tatsuya wouldn’t finish it.

“So if you hate sweets, how else do you celebrate your birthday?” he asked, drinking the rest of the dessert.

Tatsuya straightened his shoulders, “The way manly men and adults do”, he replied with a stifled laugh, then washing the sweetness from his mouth with the rest of his beer.

Junno tilted the bowl to his head and drained everything into his mouth, “You don’t know what you’re missing”, he said, too busy enjoying his dessert to notice the way Tatsuya was taken in by the long and slender frame of his neck.

They split the bill and got back out in the damped weather and perhaps it was because they were both visitors in town or perhaps it was because the food was good but it wasn’t the annoying sort of wet.

“I think I’m life’s birthday gift to you”, Junno said out of the blue, and under the streetlights, his smiled like he actually meant it.

Tatsuya looked at him amused with this playful twinkle in his eyes as they hopped over shallow puddles walking down the street.

They eventually hopped on a tram, Junno following Tatsuya this time - and wordlessly they watched the world pass in blurs outside on the rainy night. Three stops later, Tatsuya pressed the buzzer, paid and got off, standing on the sidewalk watching Junno fumble in his pocket for coins to pay his fare.

Rolling his eyes though carrying a smile, Tatsuya stepped back into the tram and bailed him.

“I can’t believe you have me paying for you on my birthday”.

Junno released an apologetic grin though answered, “Not even birthday people are so stingy with 210yen”.

Tatsuya did chuckle while crossing the road then swiping himself into the hotel he was staying. Without checking in at reception, he headed towards the elevator, “You’re absolutely the worst person to spend my birthday with”. A playful laughter trailed him from Junno.

The elevator closed and as they rode their way up, they were both watching the lights on the buttons move from floor to floor, “Too bad you’re stuck with me on this cold and very rainy night”.

And Tatsuya could hear the snicker in his voice.

They got out on the eleventh floor, strolled down the hallway with the sound of their bickering echoing through the narrow space. The view from Tatsuya’s room allowed them to see the sea- or at least where it started with the lights on the pier, the tiny theme park nearby and almost half of downtown.

With the bedroom exposed to the world like that, Tatsuya supplied, “I’d offer you something to drink but- “

“But what?” Junno turned around to face Tatsuya who was already pulling him close by the waistband.

“You can have me, instead”, Tatsuya answered unabashed. And just like that, while on his toes slowly pulling Junno down and inhaling the coconut scent off Junno’s lips, Tatsuya slipped his tongue out and slowly parted his way into Junno’s mouth.

Junno inhaled and slowly released his neediness into the kiss, wrapping his arms around Tatsuya’s waist as they rub against each other and swallowing the moans they were each making.

Tatsuya then pulled away, looked up at Junno and smiled while unbuttoning his shirt and Junno just stood there memorised, “Do you want me to undress you too?” Tatsuya licked his lips, his eyes already becoming predatory.

Junno laughed but in lieu of a reply he pitched Tatsuya on the bed behind him and climbed on top- and that was when he stripped himself of his shirt, but then just sat there admiring Tatsuya’s little nose on his perfect little face and how his eyelashes seem to brush against his cheeks each time he blinks like butterfly wings fluttering- an unspoiled beauty just waiting to be kissed_

“Don’t tell me staring is enough to quench your thirst”, Tatsuya shivered as Junno’s fingers passed over the litheness of his chest and belly.

"Not by a long shot", Junno exhaled as though full of excitement and impatience. He then leaned down and kissed those full moisten lips that parted and teased him with tongue filled kisses, “It's just that I like to admire beauty”, he replied, wriggling out of his pants.

But Tatsuya could hardly wait, starting to feel full and splendidly satisfied from all the friction between them and already, they could feel their inside boiling as though all the blood in their body was sent straight to their groin- before long, with Junno buried between his legs, Tatsuya felt a sensation that made him shiver all over while biting into Junno’s shoulder blade.

But this was where things got suspicious because for the life of them, they had no idea what was happening. Surely, they’ve experienced horny rough sex before but that night, they were starting to experience something that while it was great and highly satisfying, it was also complexed- almost a familiar tingling or like a breath of fresh air or even stranger, like an inexplicable familiar complacency between them.

So Tatsuya found himself giggling.

Momentarily stopping, Junno responded, “If you suddenly start laughing like that in the middle of this then I’ll start thinking I’m a tickle machine”.

But Tatsuya laughed all the more, opening himself wide for Junno to take full control while wrapping his arms around him, “To think the day I turn 35 is the day I decide to believe in fate and fake realities”.

Junno kissed him on his forehead and to the side of his neck then said, “Well, the old gets wiser”.

Tatsuya didn’t reply but instead, held him tight, bit into his shoulder blade again and tightened full around him. Junno then inhaled and just as Tatsuya trembled beneath him in the height of happiness and highly satisfied, Junno breathed out and released his surreal happiness too.

Near empty of his energy, Junno laid flat on Tatsuya and pressed a soft kiss to his right cheek then said, “Fate isn’t fake. It’s life’s love letter”.

Tatsuya's heart was strangely skipping even more than it did before they had sex and so frightened and confused, he turned on his side, giggled at the surrealism and replied, “Sounds pretty but even more ridiculous”.

Junno quirked an eyebrow with a curious smile, “Why ridiculous?” he genuinely asked, waiting for an answer, “Maybe I really did put a spell on you”.

And he actually sounded convincing.

But Tatsuya only chuckled to himself and just like that- without another word, in a cuddle they wrapped themselves up and fell asleep.

Though, it was no surprise that Tatsuya woke up alone in his hotel room.

He was on a quick birthday vacation but clearly Junno was only there on a stopover for work.

Looking outside his hotel window, the morning sea was glistening as the rain had stopped. It was a good day to go sandbathing.

But even with a fair day outside his window, Tatsuya still wished Junno had woken him up and allowed him a goodbye.

It wasn’t until he was about to leave the room that he saw a 1000yen on the table. Thinking it was his and was about to put it in his wallet, he found the scribble,

-‘For the tram’

A phone number was written below.

Tatsuya put the bill in his wallet.

He’d no intention of calling.

There was no such thing as fate and coincidences- and he was right.

On his way back to Tokyo he didn’t see Junno.

He really was right.

A month later he was still right.

Almost two months later he let it slip to his best friend, Nakamaru.

“The last time I’d Vietnamese food was last month with that guy”.

“What guy?” Nakamaru asked, eyebrows arched and with a ready smirk.

Tatsuya sighed, mentally beating himself for his blabbermouth but he made no effort to change topic, “The flight attendant”.

“You and a flight attendant went for food?”

“Well”, Tatsuya shrugged, “It was my birthday- that time I went to Kagoshima”.

“So you and this guy managed to hook up on such a tiny plane? Just how skilled are you?”

“No”, Tatsuya rolled his eyes, “We ran into each other later that evening while walking through town”.

And right then Nakamaru had to rest his food down and pay Tatsuya full attention, “And then what happened?”

“Nothing much”, Tatsuya shifted about in his seat, “He sorta treated me to a meal”.

By then Nakamaru was all ears, “He treated you?”, he asked, trying to wrap his head around what he was being told, “Then what happened?”

“What do you mean by what happened? I ate”.

“And then?”

“And then what?”

“How did he look?”

“Tall and slender but had a steady body and a really nice smile”.

“Oh, so you slept with him”.

“Don’t assume things”.

“So you didn’t?”

And Tatsuya groaned, “Shut up”.

Nakamaru laughed and went back to eating, “So where is he now?”

“Don't know. I never kept in touch”.

“Meaning he gave you the means to but you didn't contact him?”

“Why are you making this sound like it’s my fault?”

Nakamaru only raised his full forehead at him so Tatsuya said, “Don’t look at me like that”, but when Nakamaru didn’t shift his passive blame, Tatsuya asked, “Do you think love rains down and I just pop out my umbrella and shelter myself?”

Nakamaru took another bite of his spring rolls, “I’m not the one you should be asking that”.

Tatsuya didn’t reply because deep down he’d already told himself that even coincidences had their limit- and he and Junno had exceeded theirs and that perhaps it was the coincidence of their day that time that attracted him to Junno, and not anything beyond the ordinary logistics of thinking adults.

And just so, it was settled.

Tatsuya told himself that he’d no reason to call Junno because an out of town one night stand happened all the time. It was the novelty of it that counted and that was what made it memorable- finding warmth on a wet autumn night in the country was always perfect for intimacy. And so, like the beep beep countdown at traffic lights, bit by bit, Tatsuya attempted to erase Junno from his memory.

He had not reason to cling.

A week later, the November wind blew but Tokyo had always had its miss with the seasons so while it rained, the temperature was still soft. He was on his way home when it started drizzling. Propping his umbrella out, a sudden thought had him refolding it and putting it away. Perhaps, it was something in the air or his chat with Nakamaru but whatever it was made him want to walk under the rain and that’s exactly what he did. While everyone rushed about their business, Tatsuya leisurely walked down the street under the soft nostalgic drizzle. Standing in wait by the traffic light, the coolness of the rain felt great against his skin and it had him smiling, suddenly remembering that time in Kagoshima- back then, it was only running across a country road when no cars were coming but still, it left him feeling light and free- a taste of the life that would be good for him.

The rain always knows how we're feeling.

Perhaps Tatsuya had figured it out too.

The light changed to green but Tatsuya stopped the moment he put one foot forward, gasping at seeing the familiar face across the road looking him straight in the face.

He eventually crossed and as soon as he did Junno simply said, “I see you’re still laughing to yourself”.

And that was all it took for things to fall back into that inexplicable comfortable place.

For in that moment,

Tatsuya’s eyes slowly crinkled into a smile and deep down his heart rejoiced, “You overpaid for the tram”, he also simply replied, gesturing for Junno to follow him.

And when Junno realised that Tatsuya might’ve finally accepted life’s love letter to them, his whole face became full of merry things.

A/N: ... OKAY, so as I said, this was loooong! Fun fact, I started this for last year's birthday but didn't have a direction in mind at the time and hence opted to write something different back then... so I'm glad a solid plot came to me 2 days ago lol very giri giri. Also, I know the ending is solid but not closed enough and that's because I'm hoping to write a part 2 for Junno's birthday XD. In the end, I hope you had a pleasant read. I'm always happy reading  your feedback (even if I take forever to reply)... it's always the best part of writing ^^
