When Junno let out a loud and heavy sigh, Koki also sighed and frowned. “Are you still sulking over this man who’s supposedly in love with you?”
“It’s been four days and he still hasn’t called,” Junno sighed again, mindlessly flipping a pen betwixt his fingers.
“Then why don’t you call him?”
“I don’t want to be pushy.”
“Well, maybe you should.”
Junno was about to reply when there was a knock on the office door.
“Are you stalking someone?” Shige asked, walking in with a file which he placed on Junno’s desk. “You’re also a lawyer, Taguchi. So please don’t break the law.”
And because Koki has zero qualms about privacy, he quickly told Shige, “Junno’s lover boy is MIA”.
“Oh...”, Shige replied, looking at Junno with much curiosity in his eyes, “I didn’t know you were gay”.
“More like bi”, Junno answered, his curiosity piqued looking at Shige, “And you too are taking this very lightly. It’s either the world has changed or I’ve gotten myself some awesome coworkers and friends.”
“Both, I would say”, came a smug laugh from Koki, “But I think the awesome bit makes up the bigger part”.
A bubble of laughter followed before Shige told him, “Well it’s just that my best friend is gay, so I’m used to it from being around them.”
“Them, as in he and the boyfriend?”
“Yeah.”
Koki’s eyes suddenly twinkled. “Then maybe you can give Junno some real advice.”
“Thanks", Junno shook his head, reaching for the file, "But I’ll deal with Uepi on my own.”
“Uepi?” Shige asked with an amused grin, “What kind of name is that?”
“The one I gave him,” Junno winked with pride dripping off him.
“Now, I’m really curious”, Shige laughed, leaning against the door, “So what’s the problem?”
The laugh almost immediately slipped off Junno’s face and he sighed again. “I can’t tell if it’s a problem or a complication but we only reconnected not too long ago after years of zero contact… it's almost like we caught each other at an awkward time.”
Shige adjusted his posture to stand at full attention, “Meaning?”
“Meaning I need to be a bit more patient and wait.”
“Patience and you have never met”, Koki rolled his eyes at Junno, “Now come, let’s go get some food and dull your misery”.
.
Half an hour later, the three men found themselves passing rows of standing ramen bars and smoky doorways of tiny yakiniku restaurants. They opted for a two-storey wooden ramen shop that had an old school feeling with an endearing grubby décor of walls papered with album covers and polaroid captures of past patrons.
After sipping on a beer while waiting on the noodle, Junno turned to Shige and asked, “So when are you getting married? You seem like the steady family man.”
A little smile crept up Shige’s lips, but it wasn’t broad enough to hide the trace of melancholy as he answered, “Never.”
Junno swallowed his beer. “Never is such a strong word.”
“I mean, I do like someone but---“
“Oh no”, Koki interrupted, “don’t tell me you’re gunning with unrequited love”.
“Well I guess there’s no lighter way to put it”, Shige answered, then excused himself to answer a call.
Junno leaned back in his chair and took in a deep breath. “I can’t wait to see Uepi.”
“How did you reach to that conclusion?” Koki laughed, leaned across and playfully shoved Junno with his shoulder.
And just as Junno was about to pepper Koki, familiar sounds - laughter he hadn’t heard in a very long time but would never forget reached his ears between occasional long slurps.
“Tatsuya,” he murmured, as though unsure - the name falling off Junno’s tongue like an unexpected moment of disbelief even as bliss started to overcome him. Sitting just two tables away to his right was Tatsuya, eating while laughing with another man.
Junno’s initial reaction was almost sixth sense - the way his feet jerked, wanting to go over. But at the last minute, he pulled himself together and stayed at his table.
But Koki wouldn’t have it.
Before Junno could properly recollect himself, Koki was already walking over to Tatsuya and his friend, and by the time Junno caught up, they were already standing by the table.
“We meet again,” Koki greeted.
It took Tatsuya a while to remember Koki because the first person his eyes caught was Junno.
Kame hummed, “So you’re the infamous, Junno huh?”
“Infamous?” Junno smiled, “What have you been telling people about me, Tatsuya?”
“Ueda frets over you so much that I was starting to think you weren’t real”.
Junno’s eyes flitted back to Tatsuya who went back to slurping his noodles. “Fretting so much that you couldn’t even call me?”
“I didn’t think I’d see you here.”
“You don’t say”, Junno answered, his eyes never leaving Tatsuya, “Not that that answers my question.”
By then, everyone could tell the air had just shifted with tiny seconds starting to feel like long and awkward hours.
So Koki slowly backed away, “I’ll head back to our table.”
“I’ll come too,” Kame also excused himself.
Junno took the now empty seat and perhaps millennia had passed. It wasn’t that they couldn’t find words to say but rather, they had too many and didn’t know where to start.
“I’ve missed you”, Junno decided to go first, squeezing his fingers in his palms, “I wanted you to call me”.
Tatsuya pushed his bowl away. “I also wanted to call.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
Tatsuya took a deep inhale, then exhaled saying, “Because it’s not yet five days and because…”, he paused, fixing his eyes on Junno, “And because I still haven’t done what I’m supposed to do”.
Junno swallowed back what could only be his anxiety - wanting to ask; ‘Is it too much? Can you do it? Do you love him that much?’ But in the end, he settled with, “Take your time. I’ll wait until everything is sorted and nothing is left to worry us because I would’ve known that you choose me.”
The smile around Tatsuya’s lips was soft and it grew even softer when Junno reached his hand across the table and held his, giving him a light squeeze - much to the entertainment of Koki and Kame who were keenly watching.
“Oh, where’s Junno?” Shige asked, just returning from his phone call.
“Over there”, Koki pointed with his mouth and a full smirk, “He’s with his Uepi”.
When Shige looked across and saw Junno and Tatsuya holding hands, he nearly choked. “That’s Uepi?”
“Yeah”, Koki answered, “And this is his friend, Kame”.
“Hey,” Kame greeted but Shige was too distracted, the look in his eyes a mix of confusion and being horrified.
“Did you want to say hi too?” Koki asked, following Shige’s gaze.
“No. No need”, came Shige’s faint reply, because really, life shouldn’t be this conniving. Nor should the world be this small. Shige took a deep breath and sighed long and hard, “Tatsuya and I are already well acquainted”.
