Kame was quite the perceptive fellow. When Shige suddenly left, he turned to Koki and asked, “Did you notice?”

Koki raised an eyebrow, “Notice what? That I’m dapper?”

Kame did smile, “I like how you’re a big dreamer”, he said, taking out his phone, “Let’s exchange numbers”.

Koki’s eyes flared like a torch lit by kerosene. “You do have a pretty face but I don’t swing that way”.

Kame chuckled, punching in Koki’s number. “You forgot to add, ‘not yet’”, he winked. “So, are you and Shige friends?”

“You could say that”, Koki replied, also taking Kame’s contact, “But more like colleagues, I guess”.

“Is that so?” Kame hummed, looking over at Junno and Tatsuya still chatting in their tiny bubble. “But why does he know Tatsuya?”

Koki shrugged, “I suppose it’s a small world”.

“Too small, if you ask me”, Kame replied, draining the last mouthful of his beer.

“Meaning?”

“Meaning, I’ll keep in touch”.

And before Koki could follow up, he found himself watching Kame walk back over to Tatsuya.

.

That same evening, Shige was hanging out at Koyama’s. Actually, he was dropping off the cat food that Koyama didn’t have time to pick up from the pet store.

That’s when Shige closed the book he was reading and nonchalantly asked, “How are things with you and Ueda lately?”

Pouring the cat food into the bowl, Koyama answered, “Normal, I would say”.

There was a short pause before Shige again asked, “Noticed anything strange?”

“Strange? What would be strange?”

“So nothing’s strange?”

“Nope”.

“You sure?”

And that was when Koyama stopped what he was doing and looked over at Shige. “All these questions… Am I on the stand for something?”

“Why would you think that?”, Shige asked, reopening his book. Maybe he really did misunderstand things. Tatsuya wouldn’t hurt Koyama like that. “Well, if you say so”.

.

But a lawyer is good at picking up the signs. Shige needed proof… he needed to settle things before he could let it go so he went to the source.

When Tatsuya answered his doorbell, he didn’t even look all that surprised but he nonetheless supplied, “Koyama isn’t here”.

“I know”, Shige shrugged, eyebrow raised, “I timed him.”

And right then Tatsuya knew exactly where this sudden visit was heading. “I saw you at the ramen place the other night”, he started, stepping aside to let Shige pass, “You should’ve said hello”.

Shige hummed, looking around the apartment as though he’d expected company. “I wanted to but you looked busy”.

Tatsuya offered him some bottled water. “It was a ramen shop. Busy is the last thing I would be so- “

“Are you going to tell him?” Shige was frank. “Or rather, let me rephrase that, when are you going to tell him?”

Tatsuya sighed and leant against the kitchen counter, well aware that things were about to get annoying and messy before he even attempted to fix it. He sighed again, “A date I don’t need to report to you”.

“Fair enough”, Shige sighed too, nodding but he was clearly bothered. “So it’s really as it seemed”.

And when Tatsuya didn’t reply, Shige continued, “Well if you don’t tell him then-“

“You will?” Tatsuya finished, his eyes sharp, his tone unfriendly and heavy.

“No”, Shige replied, “I was going to say if you don’t tell him then I’ll kick your ass”.

Tatsuya shifted weight to one side of his body and actually chuckled in a mocking way, “What’s this? Shouldn’t you be happy that now you can finally swoop in and take what you’ve always wanted?”

The deep breath that Shige took in was enough to full three lungs. “I see what you’re trying to do, Ueda. But don’t think I’m going to clean up after you, so drop behaving like you’re the victim here because you’re not. So accept that you are the bad guy - and even without you telling him, you’ve already broken his heart”.

Tatsuya didn’t reply. He and Shige might not have interacted much on a friendly basis but Shige was always around Koyama… those two were tied at the hips so Tatsuya knew the man was smart… smart, caring and decent so he wouldn’t just run to tell Koyama what he saw.

“Just tell him before things take an even more unpleasant turn”, Shige told him before leaving.

.

Koyama had just finished up work, checking the time. As best friends, Koyama knew that a strangely curious Shige should not be ignored. So he called Tatsuya, wanting to meet up.

“Sorry”, Tatsuya answered his phone, “But I’m meeting Kame for drinks in a bit”.

Koyama nodded, checking the time again, “Then call me after?”

“Yeah. I also want to talk to you”.

Understandably, Koyama’s heart skipped a worried beat. “Something serious?”

“Let’s talk later”.

“… yeah… sure”.

.

From Kame’s flashy dressing finished with a broad hat, Tatsuya easily spotted him. Though, just as he was near enough, he also saw Koki walking towards them with Junno trailing behind.

“What’s this? A double date?” Koki grinned, the mischievousness in his voice and in his eyes said he had this all planned.

Junno did a hand salute and smiled, his eyes never leaving Tatsuya’s.

“Seems like it”, Kame replied, turning to lead the way, “Let’s go”.

Walking in front, Kame and Koki chattered nonstop leaving Junno and Tatsuya quietly trailing behind. It was a weekday but it was Thursday night so the streets were alive with lights and noise - it was truly the eve of Friday.

“I also play the guitar”, Koki still chatted away in front with Kame, “The guitar and the shamisen”, a burst of boastfulness in his voice.

“You’re so childish”, Kame rolled his eyes, shaking his head.

“Just admit that I’m more musically talented and cultured than you”, Koki pressed.

Kame laughed again, longer and stronger this time. “I suddenly feel like this conversation took a confusing turn but since we’re talking about who is more cultured, come see my next kabuki show”.

Koki’s mouth dropped. And both Junno and Tatsuya started giggling in the back watching Koki’s eyes looking Kame up and down then stayed on Kame’s face. “I want a front row seat”, he said.

“Because you want to see my beautiful face?” Kame smirked.

“No", Koki answered, suddenly fidgety adjusting his shoulders. "Because I like kabuki”.

Koki trying not to be obvious was cute so everyone was cramped from holding in their laughter.

But somewhere between all the laughter and the lights and the noise and that unguarded feeling that came with the eve of Friday, Junno and Tatsuya started walking closer and closer until Junno’s pinkie found Tatsuya’s and hooked them together- but then just as quickly released them, taking a glance at each other and sharing a smile.

It was quick.

But it lasted long enough for Koyama to have seen and understood.

It was day five, anyway.
