When Tatsuya wouldn’t stop downing bottles after bottles of beer, Junno was the only one who knew why.

It was day five.

Though Kame did have an inkling, but figured his place was being the supportive friend.

Though,

“Tatchan, slow down”, he eventually called out, “I won’t have the strength to carry you back”.

“No need to”, Tatsuya slurred, “I know where I live”.

“Knowing where you live isn’t the problem, drunkie… it’s getting you there”.

“Don’t worry”, Koki intervened, replacing Tatsuya’s empty beer bottle with a full one, “Junno can take him”. And when everyone including a tipsy Tatsuya gave Koki that objecting look, Koki added, “He’s the only one not drinking”.

Tatsuya looked as though he still wanted to protest and outright refuse but in the end, said nothing - even after seeing how bothered and concerned Junno seemed, because Tatsuya was weak to Junno being concerned and fussy over him.

Kame saw their eye exchanges and right and there, he knew that it wasn’t a good idea. But he kept that thought to himself, still thinking that perhaps he really shouldn’t interfere - no sense in prolonging the inevitable.

Two train transfers later, they’re walking down a neighbourhood street - Tatsuya pawing on Junno’s shoulder.

“You might still look young, Uepi... but next time, try not to forget your age, old man”.

Tatsuya poked him with his elbow, “Shut up and give me a piggyback ride”.

The look Junno gave him was a stir of intrigue and being amused. “I don’t think I’ll survive carrying you”, he said, though nothing about his tone was convincing.

“Still the weakling I see”, Tatsuya teased, tugging a bit harder at Junno’s shoulder, “Indulge me for a few minutes. We’re almost there”.

Junno didn’t refuse him - Junno could never refuse Tatsuya so he stopped, stooped and allowed Tatsuya to climb on his back. “Well, not exactly how I imagined your first time riding me”, he heaved and laughed.

Tatsuya did laugh as he wrapped his arms around Junno’s neck and immediately felt like he was home. “Your shoulders are broader than I’d expected”, he commented, fitting his head in the warmth of Junno’s neck and shoulder. “Broad and nicely toned”.

Junno took the compliment then added, “It’s all I have to show for my years of dancing”.

“Oh right, you did say that. With Koki, right?”

“Yeah”.

Tatsuya went quiet before letting go a chuckle. “He must have forgotten to boast about that to Kame”.

Junno laughed too, “I have no idea what those two are up to, but they seem to get along quite well”.

“Yeah”, Tatsuya answered, feeling a little sobered up but he liked where he was so he’d let Junno carry him all the way to his front door -

Then what?

Invite him in or say goodbye?

He took in a deep breath - the back of Junno’s neck still had the faint trace of cologne - a sort of musky tonka bean scent mixed in with the day’s light sweat. He inhaled again, breathing in two full lungs before releasing what was more like a sigh than an exhale.

He won’t invite Junno in.

“To think I’m giving you the piggyback ride of a lifetime and all I hear is your sighing”, Junno said, though a smile was evident in his voice. “Where are your verses of thanks singing me praises?”

Tatsuya once again dropped his face in Junno’s neck, his lips resting at Junno’s nape mumbling, “Turn in here”.

“Is this your apartment building?”

“Well it surely isn’t yours”.

“I’m really going to drop you if you don’t show some appreciation”, Junno threatened but the smile he was giving said he wished to pamper Tatsuya more and so, Tatsuya hugged him even tighter.

Holding in a sigh, a good half a minute passed before Tatsuya remembered that he’ll have to call Koyama as soon as he got back - tonight, he’ll have that talk - or maybe not - after all, it was already late and his head was spinning from too much beer and too many emotions and too much confusion.

“What floor?”

“Ten”.

“Wow, you’re quite the rich man, aren’t you?”

“Says the lawyer”.

Junno chuckled, “Apartment number?”

“Nineteen - Zero - Three”.

Tatsuya internally sighed again, just a few more steps and then he’ll have to give up this time with Junno and his pampering― Just around the corner, he’d bid Junno goodnight then he’d call Koyama. He sighed again― he really was the worst, planning to break a man’s heart near midnight on a Friday when it was almost bedtime.

“Sighing again? Okay, that’s it, get off me”, Junno twisted his shoulders wanting to shake Tatsuya off. But Tatsuya held on very tightly, still hooking himself to Junno - his hands and feet wrapped around Junno in a bear hug, causing them to combust in loud laughter, wrestling each other in the hallway, frolicking at their best.

But then they suddenly stopped, the laughter swiftly tucked itself in Tatsuya’s throat as soon as they turned the corner and saw Koyama sitting by Tatsuya’s door.

That was what it took for Tatsuya to quickly but coolly hop off Junno. Junno looked to Tatsuya then back to Koyama and immediately understood.

“Koyama, you’re here”, Tatsuya greeted, his voice was steady but Junno felt his unease.

“Yeah, I am here”, Koyama answered, his eyes moving up and down watching Junno at full length.

Junno took the cue. “Well you’re home so I’ll take my leave”.

Tatsuya’s expression didn’t really change but the way he looked at Junno and nodded was enough for all three to have known that something was about to change.

As they went inside, Tatsuya started to feel his fingers going weak. Even opening and closing the door gave him jitters before he at last asked, “Why didn’t you let yourself in?”

Koyama raised an eyebrow, “You never gave me a spare key”.

Tatsuya spun around, looking at him in disbelief. “Sure I did”, he said, checking the key hanger, “You must’ve lost―”, for there was his spare key still hanging.

Koyama raised an eyebrow again with a single nod of his head, “So as I said…”

Tatsuya didn’t even know what to reply or even how to react. So he just hung his set of keys and headed to the kitchen to pour himself some water. Koyama let him be, didn’t even follow behind - instead, he gave Tatsuya time to recollect his thoughts and reflect - reflect on how little a regard he had for this good man and about how weak and selfish his feelings were and how for a long time he’d dragged a good man only to now break him― and how Koyama must by now know Tatsuya’s shortcomings and fickleness but the saddest of all― was that perhaps Koyama knew this day was bound to come and yet, he still gave Tatsuya a huge amount of his love.

So as soon as Tatsuya entered the living room, Koyama looked him frank in the eyes. “I thought you were meeting with Kame”.

“I did. Junno and Koki unexpectedly showed up”.

Koyama nodded, deep in thought while Tatsuya bounced around on his feet, edgy and feeling disgusted with himself. “That guy just now, Junno... is he that friend you recently met up with again?”

Tatsuya nodded, his brain was going numb because none of the simulations he’d mentally done proved nowhere as nerve-racking as the real life displeasure.

“Koyama, I―“

“It’s been years and yet you two are still so close, huh?” Koyama cut him, “That’s amazing.”

"Well...", Tatsuya swallowed, “Well, I guess so… yeah”.

Then a few seconds of silence trickled past, leaving nothing but the tick tock of the clock that was telling the wrong time. Tatsuya swallowed again, over and over trying to get rid of the heavy air stuffed like a giant ball in his throat.

“Koyama, I― “

“Ueda, whatever you’re about to say―”, he paused, and went to stand in front of Tatsuya, “Scratch that, I know exactly what you’re about to say but guess what?”

And when Tatsuya just stood there, wondering if the question was rhetorical, Koyama took another step, kissed him on the lips and declared, “I have no intention of letting you go.”
