Good luck with the driving! I'll tell you my big, shameful secret - I still haven't learned how to drive a standard. I can only drive an automatic, LOL.
I'm learning on an automatic right now! I can't begin to tell you the number of people I know who know how to drive a standard; it certainly makes me feel rather pathetic, that's for sure. ^_^; Anyway, thanks!!
Thank you!! :D And I wouldn't say my aunt and uncle are "fascinating," per se......more like, uh, "interesting." Yeah, we'll go with that. XDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
If I manage to hear Aslan is going to be on The Daily Show, I'll make sure to watch, so thanks for that. ;-)
ffffffff i had "squalor victoria" cycling through my head all DAY yesterday, and i'd finally rid myself of it, AND NOW IT'S BACK. thanks a lot, bro.
and augh, happy incredibly belated birthday! sorry i'm such a bum livejournal friend D: man, twenty-one. i'm jealous. well, maybe not that jealous. i don't wanna be a grown-up! but not having to skirt around laws with fake IDs and Very Furtive Debauchery would be nice. *envies*
i also envy you your aunt and uncle. they sound...quirky. I LIKE IT.
dfnsdkfjkdf ORYX AND CRAAAAAAAAAAKE. IS POSSIBLY. MY FAVORITE BOOK EVER. DO LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK OF IT.
and hrm...i've been weary of white like me. i dunno. haven't read it myself. lemme know what you think of that one too!
interesting link dump--and i agree, reza aslan is a fucking awesome writer. am bookmarking; will return to it when i have moar time.
You're welcome!! XD Incidentally, "Squalor Victoria" is one of my favorite National songs, as well as.....well, let's just say it's easier for me to think of songs of theirs I don't like then those I do. ^_^;
Thank you!! :D And don't worry about being late; I suck at this sort of thing too, so don't worry. And yeah, I totally agree! On the one hand, being considered to be a full adult, woohoo!! On the other, actual Adult Responsibilities™ are fast approaching, which is major Do Not Want. :P
My aunt and uncle are......interesting. They're great cooks, and they both really love life and all it has to offer, and I respect that immensely. But I'm also not a huge fan of their sense of humor, which kinda sucks but eh, what can you do, y'know? :/
Why have you been wary of White Like Me? I know Tim Wise has gotten some very justifiable criticism, but everything I've read by him so far (all online) has been utterly amazing. I already have a book by him, but I've been waiting to get WLM because I hear that's the best

i knoooooow, right? the national are kind of UNRELENTINGLY amazing. MATT BERNINGER, GIVE US A BREAK AND SHARE SOME OF YOUR AWESOME WITH THE REST OF US PLS *________*
d'aw. what kind of sense of humor do your aunt and uncle have? ngl, they still sound like people i would totally want to hang out with.
admittedly, i haven't read anything tim wise has actually written (i first heard of white like me, like, juuuust before i read your post xD), but just...the concept squicks me a bit. maybe it'll get some mainstream attention and get some more people to be a bit more socially conscious; analysis of privilege is definitely something more people should be thinking about. it's just the formatting that squicks me, i guess; i know the title is supposed to be provocative, but i feel like a memoir all about white privilege runs the danger of being terribly solipsistic and perhaps even counterproductive. again, i have not actually read this book, so this is a total gut reaction; i'm just expounding on why i'm a bit wary of it. maybe it'll turn
