In fifth grade we had to go through D.A.R.E., a drug use prevention program that has been very effective in getting kids to use more and more drugs. Part of this involved an essay-writing contest, where the best writer in each fifth-grade class in our school got to present his/her essay at some evening D.A.R.E. function. Mine got picked, and we got awarded cheap medals at that dinner as well. (I still have that medal hanging up on my bedroom wall -- I really fucking need to put it away.)

Ha ha, the exact same thing happened to me in the 6th grade. I have no idea what happened to my medal, though. Really it was more of a testament to my essay writing ability, since I couldn't care less about D.A.R.E. and it's not like I kept my "promise" to remain drug free or anything.
