Ethanol Fuel Additives. A bad Idea?

I saw something on T.V. recently and got all excited about E-85.
A blend of Ethanol 85% to Gasoline 15%. It looked like an alternative
fuel that is completely renewable, cost effective and more gentle on the
evironment.
So why haven't we done this before? Is there a Catch?

I think that in a perfect world where all Americans were truly concerned about the environment/the future of the plant we would have no trouble at all conserving fuel and doing things like purchasing more economical vehicles

This is why I want to be a city planner! Make everything convenient and walkable. So long as people insist on having an acre of land in the boonies, public transit will never be viable. We need to build self-sustaining communities and end the sprawl! Easier said than done. Hong Kong is a VERY dense city that happens to have the ONLY PUBLIC TRANSIT SYSTEM IN THE WORLD THAT MAKES A PROFIT! All others are heavily subsidized, even New York's. I think people are afraid of cities. Well, you can have all the convieniences with out the hassle. How a series of small towns set at different stations along a railroad? The Portland Metro Area does that With the TriMet (http://www.trimet.org/tip/index.htm and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transportation_in_Portland). Even Delaware has a "village" propsed for the area between the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal and Shallcross Lake north of
