so i'm finally reading the vampire lestat, and only a few pages in, i'm already enjoying it a lot more than i did interview with a vampire, by a considerable order of magnitude. so now i'm pondering the other books in the series, and i thought i'd ask my f'list for recs ( Read more... )

I liked The Vampire Lestat a LOT more than Interview. I thought Louis was a really whiny narrator.

As far as the whole series: I skipped Pandora and quite early on in Armand.

I liked Interview, I loved Lestat, Queen of the Damned had its moments, and I kinda liked Body Thief and ... um... the one where he meets Satan, whatever that was. Not sure if I read any others. If I did, they didn't impress me.

As far as having to read them all: I think you need to read the first three. Although Queen of the Damned seemed really slow to me, it does cover all the history. After that one, you know everything, and then you can pick and chose which stories to read, if any.

i got a cheap copy of qotd, and yeah...it does look like it goes on rather a bit. i think i kind of have to get blood and gold, though, because it's about vampires in ancient rome. i mean, seriously, if there's a human being who can refuse a book about vampires in ancient rome? it isn't me.

anyway, glad to hear i can pick and choose after a point, because glory be...maybe the plotines actually make more sense within the story itself and only sound ridiculous when summarized out of context, but yeesh. vampire body swap? i've read much less silly fanfic.

The vampire body swap was a silly idea but it was fun to see Lestat re-learning how to be human.

My opinion? Stop after Lestat. I slogged through two more books after that and I want those hours of my life back. Srsly.

I, too, enjoyed Lestat a lot more than Interview but, really, the series peaks there.

Well, she might want to read Queen of the Damned to finish the story...
But I agree that it's pretty much all downhill from there.

QotD drove me up the wall.

In the end, I took a friend's advice and skipped the first 150 pages - that made the book a LOT more bearable! I finally managed to finish it, via that approach.

150 pages...is that just part 1, then ('the road to the vampire lestat')? in my copy that lasts until page 195. so your friend's advice was to start with part 2 ('all hallows eve')? i've heard there's a cliffhanger at the end of lestat, and i only bought qotd so i wouldn't go crazy wondering what happened. hates cliffhangers to pieces, precious.

I pitched Vittorio the Vampire across the room. It was so awful, I can't even describe it.
