Can't help but feel that Gus would have to notice Mel's increasing shrewishness - which, IMO, rendered her increasingly unattractive - and make unflattering comparisons with his handsome Daddy.

‘And Dus could nap with us too,’ he thought. ‘Dus and Daddy like to nap together. I know they do, ‘cause once they sneaked up into Uncle Mikey’s room for a nap. I went in and found them. Uncle Mikey yelled because he didn’t like them using his old room. And Momma didn’t like it because she doesn’t like anything Daddy does. She’s stupid. She yelled at Daddy and at my Dus. She yells a lot. But she doesn’t look pretty when she yells like Daddy does. She just looks mean. I’m glad we’re not living with her any more. I like living with just Mommy. And Daddy and Dus like it too, ‘cos they come to see us all the time now Momma’s not there being mean.’

That was so cute and sad and funny. But I love Gus' unbridled hero worship of his daddy. This was adorable!

Just wrote a long response to this and lj ate it. Damn!

It was basically along the lines that I'm grateful to you for picking up the sadness in this paragraph. I feel that Mel's general shrewishness for most of S4 and S5, coupled with her constantly expressed negativity towards his father is, in fact, a very sad and damaging thing for a little boy to cope with. I hated that Linds never makes any attempt to protect him from it.

As for the hero worship - it seems to me extremely likely that at that age Gus would hero worship his tall and beautiful Daddy who sits on the floor with him and pulls faces and makes him laugh.

As I said in another comment, it seems weird to me that there's no indication that Gus in any way relates to Justin as Brian's partner in canon. I mean, Justin's a constant in Brian's life right through five seasons - literally since Gus was born - but he never sees them together, never associates them with one another, never relates to Justin in any way as his fourth "parent"? No - that doesn't make any sense at all to me.

This made me smile so much. I love Gus fic, and Gus calling Justin 'Dus' is just too cute.
