I saw fade live in Osaka on Sunday evening. It was a slightly late decision on my part as I only bought the ticket about a month ago, but I'm very glad I did!
I saw fade in the same venue on their Kings of Dawn tour in December (it was my birthday, actually!) and I'm pleased to say that the venue seemed to be far fuller and more enthusiastic this time. The crowd were hot!
The support band,
Alfard, were cute. Nice songs, the band members were happy and they got a decent reaction from the crowd. They fitted in with the atmosphere very well!
Before Alfard took the stage and during the change over from them to fade, the two video screens on opposite sides of the walls were running through fade's PV catalogue. That was an awesome idea. They even showed a PV for the song Jon did for Gran Turismo, the opening to Deadman Wonderland (first time I've seen any footage from that anime and I have to say... what the hell??), a trailer for Shark Night and also the full length version of the Close to You PV.
The Close to You PV was met with a lot of laughter and screams of cute. I'll be a tease and not explain why though... you'll have to see it yourselves XD The short version is a pretty careful edit and cuts out all of the cuteness.
Speaking of Close to You, when entering the venue everyone was given a free CD that had the English version of the song and also a short version of Chase for Daylight. Thanks guys!
I don't remember the exact setlist, but it was very similar to the ones from the previous shows and was a perfect mix of old songs, and the new album. Maybe there could have been more new songs really but nope, it was fine!
For Chase for Daylight, Toyo's death metal backing vocals were pre-recorded and the band worked hard to get the crowd to sing along to those, instead of along with Jon's lead vocals. Kansei and Nori especially are fantastic at reaching out to the crowd and getting them to sing along.
For Million to One, Jon reaches out into the audience to grab people's hands as he sings "so take my hand". There were some rather rabid fangirls in the centre of the first few rows who really, really did not want to let go of him and would just molest any part of his body they could reach whenever he came near them. He quite visibly told them on a couple of occasions to not pull him into the crowd and to let him go. They didn't really pay much attention to him...
Moment of Life was a real stand out track from the live again. It has a totally different feel to all of the other songs as there's always some arm waving, fist punching or singing for the crowd to do but Moment of Life has none of that. It's definitely a song to just stand back and appreciate how epic and meaningful the song is, and because it's the one song that you just listen to, it becomes even more. The band are all completely on point for it too and it's just a delight to listen to.
I'm so happy that From the Inside Out is on the setlist. In fact, when they were asking for suggestions for the Kings of Dawn setlist last November/December, I think I suggested it. So, I'm going to claim it was played for me XDD (even if I did for the longest time think the chorus line was "fuck me inside out" and not "from the inside out". Will check song titles in the future!)
It was very hot on stage so Jon lost his shirt rather early on. The crowd then decided they wanted to see Kansei get naked too, and started shouting for him to follow Jon's lead. Kansei, being the shy and retiring guy that he is, refused. At least until the Jack Daniels worked it's way into his blood stream a bit more. Jon was pushing for him to strip too, whereas Rui seemed slightly bemused by the crowd wanting it and Nori was just killing himself laughing.
Kansei unbuttoned his shirt and then played all shy and coy (the crowd didn't fall for that one) while Jon held his guitar, and then finally took his shirt off. So cute! He played to the crowd a little, ran to the front of the stage... and then ran to the back, grabbed a tour shirt from one of the crew that still had the crew member's pass stuck onto it, and then put the shirt on.
The crowd then asked Rui to take his shirt off. Rui reacted with his middle fingers and a very obvious 'no'. Spoil sport XD
During Last Man Standing, Jon threw in a couple of ad libbed extra vocals and during the quieter part just over halfway through, he was trying to get the crowd to quieten but didn't realise that Kansei was in the corner, trying to get them to applaud. Jon tried again to quieten them while Kansei was still happily clapping away before giving up and just carrying on. I was stood third row in front of Kansei at this point and I love being in front of him because he's a little dynamo on stage. They all are, but Kansei is extra bouncy. I'll even ignore the AKB48 sticker he has on his guitar now...
Beautiful is still the great crowd anthem it always has been, and Ten is the perfect show closer. Before it, Jon gave a lovely MC about fade's ten years of life with the current members and how they hoped to take it to the next level. I really hope they can - they deserve it!
After the show, Godo, Kansei, Nori and Jon all came out to the goods to sign and chat with people. Kansei and Godo were on the right, Nori and Jon on the left and in the middle were the staff selling the goods, so it meant you couldn't grab all four members at the same time. You kinda had to queue twice - once for the pair on the right and once for the pair on the left. Because I had a night bus to catch, I had to prepare for that and eat, I didn't think I'd have time to grab both pairs so I chose Nori and Jon as I wanted to ask Jon about the YFCz message books. I did manage to shake Godo's hand and thank him as he walked in though, so I was happy with that!
All four of them were so nice about chatting with the fans and signing autographs. It's another one of those things that really makes you want to see them succeed, even though a lot of success means it won't be as easy to be as hands on with the fans as they are now.
So yeah, I got Nori and Jon to sign my ticket and spoke to them both briefly (well, it was slightly more than briefly with Jon. I felt kinda bad about holding up the queue so much with him), bought a towel and phone strap (those are soooo awesome. Really. I highly recommend them), grabbed a flyer for the fanclub (paid and joined today!) and then left to catch the overnight bus back to Disneyland.
Can't wait for the tour final in Shinjuku on Saturday!!!
