Yesterday I went out and voted 'yes' on an amendment to the Texas state constitution that defines marriage in Texas as "the union of one man and one woman

I agree. If marriage is to be used, one must realize that the basis of marriage is in religion. And if you don't believe in any sort of religion, then you're just using marriage as a way to get whatever government priveliges you want. And if the government wants to coddle gay people even more than they already have, there are other ways to do it than to sully the principle of marriage.
Ah. My thoughts on the matter.jatgNovember 9 2005, 18:11:53 UTC
My 2 cents:
Marriage Amendment:
1. If you are a good Mormon girl and it passes it affects you not at all. 2. If you are a good Mormon girl and it doesn't pass, it affects you not at all.
I don't see how allowing two people to get married in this lifetime, regardless of gender affects you in the eternities any more than the debates about allowing seperate races to marry.

hoo boy.
I doesn't effect me, per se, but it effects the society around me.
It will effect the children my children will be playing with, who their parents will be, who can adopt. What they will be taught in public schools.
It also means that my state is just a little less wicked then I thought it was, which I find a reassuring. It means this gentile nation won't be struck down with some of the dismal prophesies from the BofM just yet (because I like my chariots and I'd prefer them not to be cut off).
And because the prophet has asked us to support laws supporting marriage in local legistation. Because of the Church's general stance of nonpartisianship, that makes me pay attention.
I don't oppose consenting adults doing whatever in private, just that they don't call it marriage, and I'd MUCH prefer they didn't adopt. Children who never had a chance to have truth taught to them worries me a lot.

Y'know, considering that speeding up evil speeds up the Second Coming...oh nevermind, I'll be a good girl. XD Or try to be a better girl at any rate. Eh heh heh...oy.
I say, let people marry no matter what. Heck, let 'em marry and be miserable like the rest of us.
I'm just a human who has really no idea of the 'real' god/gods, creation, or whatever, and don't pretend just because I have a book or books written by man that may or may not be a political statement/means to control a group of people, that I know about the Almighty. Especially since I consider it kind of arrogant to say I know any, all, or even some about a being that, if he or she exists, is so much more powerful and larger than myself, that it's ridiculous to speculate on his/her/its reality.
But that's just -my- two cents that I ask you not to be offended by, because of -my- beliefs.
I think it wou;d be arrogant of me if I said I figured out about Him all by myself, but I hope you won't think me arrogant if I say I know there is a knowing and knowable God who loves us and wishes to be known by us, and that if we honestly, sincerely want to know Him and have a relationship, we can have one - a deep, sincere, personal knowledge that He's real, and loves us individually, by name - by unique, unrepeatable soul. The keys are prayer and sincerity. Ask Him if He's real, if He's there, if He's listening. If you want to know and have even a little hope you might get an answer, you'll hear Him - a quiet, warm sensation in your heart, something just for you. I know because I've felt it, over and over, and I can't deny it. I just... know.
