Serpentine: Chapter Ten
In Which Jean-Claude's Wardrobe Could Purchase a Small Nation
Anita, Micah, and Nathaniel all watch as Jean-Claude wanders around the room getting dressed. This being an LKH novel there is about two pages of clothes porn in an eight page chapter. Half a page is dedicated to Anita describing the engagement rings she and Jean-Claude have exchanged. Anita claims she didn't want engagement rings at all -keeping in mind that Crimson Death started with a description of the rings she'd bought with Micah and Nathaniel- but ended up with three just from Jean-Claude. There is the original set that sounds like it needs supernatural strength to wear because it's so heavy with gems, as well as less gaudy pair for everyday wear, and a third final set that Anita actually gave some input into the design of.

Oh, and they also have a pair of tiara's in the works because Anita underestimated Jean-Claude's desire to be a pretty pretty princess.

As a side note because it involves a mystery that I have been complaining about, Anita comments on how delivery guys that bring the bedding don't, “walk past the bedroom of the king.” So... again I ask, who does? I am very much starting to get the impression that Jean-Claude does his own laundry. Also, one of the reasons given for not letting the delivery people into the underground is because they are human and most of the workers aren't. Are their people so unprofessional that they are likely to attack/infect any rando human that crosses their path? And these are the folks that are trusted to work under an entertainment facility for families with access to sniper nests.

One bad day, man. All it takes is one...

Before he leaves Jean-Claude and Micah have a bonding moment over their preference of women for lovers, and how circumstances has led them to letting men they wouldn't have chosen into their beds. Micah learns that Asher, he of the tinsel hair, had been Jean-Claude's first male lover.

Anita has a creepy, to me, moment where she considers that the rush of pleasure she gets from seeing Jean-Claude wear the velvet choker she picked out for him is why he likes it when she wears the engagement rings. An ownership thing, I think.

Nathaniel tries to drag Jean-Claude away from being a responsible adult and back into bed, but like a responsible adult the vampire resists. Nathaniel pouts and goes back to being a kitty burrito, but only until he realizes Micah and Anita want to be responsible adults, too. Feeling left out he demands to go with them when they talk to Melanie the Lamia. His reasoning? They used to be “fuck buddies” so he has more of a rapport with her and is more likely to get good information out of her.

Sad to say it, but the violet eyed attention whore is right. With A&M's approach to crime/mystery solving they would probably try to bad cop and badder cop the 1000+ year old snake lady and get shut down hard. Anita comments on how the idea of past Nathaniel and past Melanie fucking bothers her, and it isn't because Melanie once tried to kill her. It is because Melanie is a lamia and half snake people are creepy.

And she was wondering why Micah's clients don't like turning into a mass of them? Ugh.

If I get through this whole damn book and don't see one Indiana Jones reference I will be very disappointed.
