Book proposal

After the initial rush of putting together the many pieces that I had already started on, the book proposal has taken a turn towards the slooooooow pace of one grain of sand at a time. But if I want to submit it to my writing group for feedback this month I need to get it together by Thursday ( Read more... )

I went to Backspace in New York, and found it good to meet some people face to face. The two biggest things I took away in terms of knowledge were:

1) Everything at this conference confirms what I have learned by reading agent blogs thoroughly, and for free. But it's nice to know I'm on the right track.

2) 90% of the writing there wasn't good. It was fine, it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good. Nice to know the competition is not as strong as I thought.

However, what I did walk away with was six agents who said, "when it's done, send it to me" and that was worth the money.

YIKES! What the heck? Something doesn't smell right. That's a lot for a conference, and a lot for 8 minutes.

More and more I am seeing how I could be making a fortune if I were a different sort of person. I don't mean to say it's unscrupulous to take money for a service rendered, but these things set up more for the pros to make money than the attendees to benefit from really stick in my craw.
