It had been in the works for the entire month. As with all of Supernova's parties, meticulous planning had gone into every little detail, enthusiasm sweeping over the collective staff just like the holiday spirit that consumed the city. It was impossible not to be excited; Halloween came only once a year, and unlike the madcap frenzy that was Christmas, it was a night that celebrated neither good will nor presents - just tricks and mischief and the occasional treat in form of an explosive party. What meaning there was behind the occasion had been lost to time and, if you asked even the most jaded person, the only thing to look forward to was what Supernova had planned in honor of the scariest night of the year.
In the last 24 hours before they opened their doors to the costumed masses, the staff had been kicking into overdrive to put the finishing touches on the casino and restaurant. While Supernova's usual theme had been a chic (by Hub standards) neon-lit playground with a space motif, all of the stars, planet and alien decals were now accompanied by skulls, cobwebs, and sinister - but fake - looking radroaches that clung to the walls. Lights were strung around the walls and even the bar, bright oranges and purples that cast the floors in a dazzling glow, and jack-o-lanterns sat propped on every available surface, doubling as lamps for the tables that usually had them in some halfhearted attempt to appear atmospheric and romantic. Obviously, the whole thing had cost the owners an arm and a leg; unless you had some very good friends or were up early to stand in line at the marketplace, buying real pumpkins was an extremely expensive affair, which was why 90% of the jack-o-lanterns seen around the city during this time of year were made out of plastic or some other similar material, painted and lit with electronic lights to look real. Supernova's pumpkins were the real deal, carved and lit traditionally. It was the casino's biggest party of the year next to their Christmas celebration, and no expense would be spared to ensure that everything was not only appropriate but picture perfect.
By the time the caterers had arrived with the food, children were already meandering about the city streets in costume, some even lining up with their parents an hour in advance before Supernova opened. Of course the staff hadn't forgotten about the underage portion of their guests. While the casino remained open for the adults, a large part of the restaurant was closed off for the kids where a number of party games were set up ranging from bobbing for apples, to fortune telling, to bowls set aside for a game of
Dead Man's Guts. A buffet was set up with a variety of specialty dishes and drinks including Ghoul Blood (actually fruit punch) and Spiderweb Soup (actually a very tasty chicken noodle soup), and waiters carrying platters of hors d'oeuvre shaped like eyeballs would be wandering from table to table within the an hour.
It was shaping up to be a very special night. There was a chance that the press would be in attendance, which was always nice; a little publicity never hurt. As soon as the doors unlocked and everyone began to pile in, the mandatory costume check began; although the uncostumed received no special attention, those dressed up (young children in particular) received a fistful of candy for their trick or treat bags and were signed up for the annual costume contest - the highlight of the evening. The prizes changed every year and all would agree that you were likely to get something completely absurd just as well as you could get something absolutely astounding.
After all, it wasn't Halloween without tricks and treats.
