The "map" was carved into his chest and stomach, beginning below the sternum and spilling on to one side of his ribcage, finally ending down on the soft skin of his belly. He looked absolutely ridiculous, standing in the street, his shirt and waistcoat undone so that he could observe the not-so-intricate arrangement of scabs that the Hatter had left on his body. Each time he glanced down at the map, he grinned, let out a singular bark of laughter, and shook his head. This was crazy.

He loved it.

Of course, the Mad Hatter was no mapmaker, and, though it was true he wouldn't lose it, the Joker had a bit of trouble actually reading the directions carved into his skin. When he finally came to the house he believed they were pointing him towards ( ... )

"Att-tt-t-t-tt!" The Hatter leaped forward and shoved his body against the door, seemingly with the intention of... keeping the Joker out?

"Doghouse!" he shouted through the door, before the Joker could protest. "Out there!"

And sure enough there was a... structure of some sort, near the "house".

With "JOKER" painted on the top.

The Joker was a little bit taken aback by his friend's sudden movement to barricade the door, but, smiling, he removed his hands from the doorknob and took a step back, throwing them up in a mock gesture of surrender, his head bowed (though there was no shame on his face; only wicked glee).

"Now 'Hatter, you wanted me to come to your house, didn't you?" he asked dryly.

He was not going into that thing.

"I said you were going to the dog house! That's all I said!" the Hatter said, bracing his feet against the floor in case the Joker got any bright ideas.

Not that barricading would do much in that rickety old house.

"The doghouse is a metaphor," he said in a raised voice, but he was amused, not angry.

He shook his head, and then approached the door again. He put his hand on the doorknob, but did nothing to actually force the door open.

"I'll give you to the count of three," he mused.
