It didn't make any sense.

Oh he could believe the idea of a city, even a world, being used as a kind of giant prison. That sounded right up the alley of human morality. He could believe in people being snatched from wherever they were and dumped off without a warning or explanation to fend for themselves against monsters and other captives and who knew what else. He could even believe that the entities running the place would call themselves gods.

What didn't make sense was how they'd taken him. How he could be here independently, and how Sora could be here at the same time when he knew that was impossible, unless Sora's heart had been taken by darkness a second time, but then Sora wouldn't be on the network talking like he had amnesia. Crap.

The voice ( unfamiliar, but oddly distinctive, all at the same time ) came from behind him, yards and yards away, and part of Sora didn't even want to turn around, didn't want to face whatever it was that he was supposed to be facing, because. He didn't even know what they wanted, didn't know what their real purpose was, what they were trying to accomplish, and now ( ... )

The shocked expression on Sora's face disturbed him more than it should have. He'd really thought that showing up in person would do something, shake some tiny piece of recollection down from the rafters of Sora's empty brain, anything at all. Anything but the blank unrecognition. How could Sora really not know him ( ... )

Yeah, okay. So if he hadn't been confused before --

There was an uncomfortable stretch of silence where Sora said nothing in response, where he didn't move or think or breathe or do anything at all, because, really, what was going on? Part of him wanted to say, okay, you're lying, but the other part couldn't, because there was something about the way he said all of it that made it seem so true. But if it were true, then how could he have not known about this, and how could he just be figuring it out now, in this strange city with its strange skies ( of all places ( ... )
