Adam had suggested he would be coming unarmed, but he had never demanded Sweeney do the same. Even if he had, no one took his friends away from him. No one.

Because he had been asked to do no such thing and felt "gentleman's" rules were for gentlemen, Sweeney was subtly armed to the teeth tonight. He'd added a pistol to the one always under his coat, had another--just a 22--in his boot, and had secreted weapons of various kinds within easy reach--but not easy view--all over the shop. Let the bastard come into his territory and think he was going to tell Sweeney Todd his business. No, he'd not have that happening again. Not ever.

When the knock came at the door--what stupid sod knocked on the door of a shop?--Sweeney strode over to the washbasin and began to wash his hands in the last of the clean water he had. "'s open," he called.

The first thing Adam had bought at the upper level was a new shirt. Thanks to fighting the monsters, his was rather dirtied up, and washing it didn't do well for blood here. So he got a new one. He was dressed cleanly, no intention of ever having a bad presentation (even when he spent those thirty years locked behind bars, he didn't once look terribly unkempt, except in the time with Elle which he was sure - somehow, he was still paying for).

What Sweeney didn't know about him was to Adam's advantage, and he knew it. Something about the man gave him this overriding sense of doom.

"I was wrong to assume that it had been closed already," he said, stepping inside the door. His blue eyes were darker than usual, watching Sweeney carefully, observing the man. "And I also assume you know what this is about."

Sweeney pretended to glance up once or twice at the gentleman through furrowed brow as he finished his ablutions, feigning annoyance more than wariness. But those glances were all he needed to size-up the other gentleman. Claire had made a mistake telling him what the weakness of her ability was, and again that Adam shared it. If worst came to worst, he was prepared to deal with this threat.

Trouble was, Claire seemed to have some feelings toward this man, and so it would be best to work things out without violence. ...though it was not his way. Sweeney thought he would try...at least for a little.

"I assume nuffing," he replied calmly, taking a fresh towel from a rack nearby and wiping his hands on it before looking up to meet the other man's eyes, challenge plain on his face.

The challenge in Sweeney's eyes made Adam realize that this man probably didn't want to talk much. He rolled his own eyes -- he thought Sweeney to be foolish if he believed he could even harm Adam. A trained soldier who had been shot, stabbed, pummeled by arrows, lost limbs, thrown off cliffs...was not about to get done in by a barber. He did regret not bringing his sword, and wished he had brought a gun to hide under his shirt ( ... )
