Adam had suggested he would be coming unarmed, but he had never demanded Sweeney do the same. Even if he had, no one took his friends away from him. No one.

Because he had been asked to do no such thing and felt "gentleman's" rules were for gentlemen, Sweeney was subtly armed to the teeth tonight. He'd added a pistol to the one always under his coat, had another--just a 22--in his boot, and had secreted weapons of various kinds within easy reach--but not easy view--all over the shop. Let the bastard come into his territory and think he was going to tell Sweeney Todd his business. No, he'd not have that happening again. Not ever.

When the knock came at the door--what stupid sod knocked on the door of a shop?--Sweeney strode over to the washbasin and began to wash his hands in the last of the clean water he had. "'s open," he called.

The first thing Adam had bought at the upper level was a new shirt. Thanks to fighting the monsters, his was rather dirtied up, and washing it didn't do well for blood here. So he got a new one. He was dressed cleanly, no intention of ever having a bad presentation (even when he spent those thirty years locked behind bars, he didn't once look terribly unkempt, except in the time with Elle which he was sure - somehow, he was still paying for).

What Sweeney didn't know about him was to Adam's advantage, and he knew it. Something about the man gave him this overriding sense of doom.

"I was wrong to assume that it had been closed already," he said, stepping inside the door. His blue eyes were darker than usual, watching Sweeney carefully, observing the man. "And I also assume you know what this is about."

Sweeney pretended to glance up once or twice at the gentleman through furrowed brow as he finished his ablutions, feigning annoyance more than wariness. But those glances were all he needed to size-up the other gentleman. Claire had made a mistake telling him what the weakness of her ability was, and again that Adam shared it. If worst came to worst, he was prepared to deal with this threat.

Trouble was, Claire seemed to have some feelings toward this man, and so it would be best to work things out without violence. ...though it was not his way. Sweeney thought he would try...at least for a little.

"I assume nuffing," he replied calmly, taking a fresh towel from a rack nearby and wiping his hands on it before looking up to meet the other man's eyes, challenge plain on his face.

The challenge in Sweeney's eyes made Adam realize that this man probably didn't want to talk much. He rolled his own eyes -- he thought Sweeney to be foolish if he believed he could even harm Adam. A trained soldier who had been shot, stabbed, pummeled by arrows, lost limbs, thrown off cliffs...was not about to get done in by a barber. He did regret not bringing his sword, and wished he had brought a gun to hide under his shirt ( ... )

Tension crackled in the air, but Sweeney remained calm. He was a man well-used to keeping his bloody temper in check when it was necessary.

The man's words were...curious. Sweeney's reasons for disliking Adam were personal. He had no concern for why those 'at home' did or did not care for the man.

"I've not forced anyfing on Claire," Sweeney responded, his voice dangerously soft. He began to walk across the shop toward Adam, slowly.

"Are yer suggestin, Sir, vat a true fovver would allow 'er to get hurt--nay, encourage such?" He stopped, closer but not nearly within arm's reach...yet.

Sweeney crossed his arms over his chest, glowering. "Per'aps vat's how yer do fings in Americer, but it en't how Sw-- John Weaver does. An I en't about to change my ways for the likes of yer."

"She verbalized that she believed you would get upset with her should she chose to stay with me," Adam said. That in itself seemed as though he was forcing a decision upon Claire. And that Claire felt like that. "She doesn't wish to offend you. Just..."

A long pause.

"...She doesn't wish to leave me." He waved his hand when Mister Weaver was talking about being a father. "I know nothing about being a father. I only k now about what it is like to protect someone." His eyes were dark. "I encourage her to discover and learn her power. I will not let her do things that would cause...actual harm."

Sweeney's brows drew down in consternation and annoyance at Adam's words. What sort of pussy-footed tripe...? "Claire can speak wif me herself. Yer gettin in the way is only gettin in the way."

He had every faith that Adam knew nothing about fathering. That much was abundantly clear. Neither did Sweeney trust him to determine what was and was not safe for Claire in the process of 'discovering and learning her power.' There were a few choice words Sweeney could have said about all that, but he kept mum and remained firm.

"Now get out of my shop," he snapped, but not half as hard as he might have. This was a pointless exercise with too much at stake. Better to cut it short now. Sweeney turned away, walking back to his chair and beginning to put up his tools for the night. "I have nuffing more to say to yer, Sir."
