Jason didn't pinpoint into the house after leaving the Nexus. The magic or whatever it was that the devices depended on left too noticeable a signature, and he wasn't sure of Scott's mood

Scott's in what used to be the auxiliary laboratory.

There were specimens down here.
There were instruments.
There was a working computer.

Note the previously employed past tense.

He's gripping his knees, hard enough that joints pop, and staring at the wall.

Jason finally ventures down that way, a little shocked at the mess. He's glad nothing blew up, but then Scott was too damn careful to keep that from happening.

"Hey, boss... I'm sure no one saw. They were too busy dealing with their own stuff."

"...but you heard. You have questions, pup?" Scott asks- trying to make it sound like the usual tones he uses.

It's just dead. Cold. Flat.

"No." Jason just stares at the floor for a bit, biting his lip. He hasn't heard that tone directed toward him in... ever. So many things he wants to do, make it better for Scott most of all.

"But I'm easily replaceable. I even come with a modifiable memory."
