When the British charge d’affairs in Texas, Charles Elliott, tried to convince Texas President Sam Houston to agree to abolition as a condition of reunification with Mexico, it only made matters worse in the minds of Southern aristocrats who feared that slavery would be shut out of the Western frontier. Even President John Tyler bought into this idea, opening up secret talks with Houston about the potential annexation of Texas, with an eye toward his reelection in 1844. He quit the race early, but the candidate who won - James K. Polk - had made the boiling issue of Texas annexation a centerpiece of his campaign, with key support from Southern Democrats skeptical of British intentions and fearful of a haven for runaways rising up next door. And so, on Feb. 19, 1846, Texas joined the formidable bloc of slave states that would eventually become the Confederacy.
But there was never any truth to the elaborate theory that the British Parliament abolished slavery merely to throw a clandestine army of liberty onto the shores of the American South. The Slave Emancipation Act of 1833 had been a complicated political mess back home and involved a 20 million pound cash payoff to slave owners, which gobbled up 40 percent of the national budget. And Sam Sharpe’s revolt had no purpose other than freedom for the enslaved people of Jamaica; he did not harbor any ambitions beyond the island and he never mentioned the United States.
Calhoun’s imagined conspiracy of external forces was as byzantine as it was harmful: it only deflected attention from what was already rotting in the United States and overshadowed a meaningful debate on the future of the “peculiar institution” of slavery on the frontier.
The Republic of Texas likely would have joined the Union as a slave state at some point regardless, perhaps even in the 1850s, but its status as an independent republic was cut short by several years. Why? A faraway slave revolt set Jamaica on fire in 1831, serving as a significant trigger point within moving parts, clouding judgment in Washington and stoked the paranoia of American policymakers.

Каким образом возникают теории заговора и что делает их такими живучими?

Частично это связано с преодолением когнитивного диссонанса. Объяснение, которое предлагает теория заговора, кажется ее носителю намного более логичным, чем по-другому необъяснимые явления. Логично, если человек, разбогатев, женится на молоденькой восточноевропейской модели, покупает собственные гольфклубы и собственный Боинг, на котором большими буквами пишет свое имя. Нелогично, если он, начинает тратить деньги на поддержку демократии в Восточной Европе, подобно Соросу, или на вакцинацию детей в Африке, подобно Биллу Гейтсу. Непонятная мотивация непонятных богачей встает на места, если представить, что таким образом они тайно пытаются захватить мировое господство. Подобным образом, рабовладельцы Техаса не могли понять, зачем Британская империя освобождает рабов на Ямайке, если только не пытается таким образом поставить США и Техас на колени.



Конспирология живуча еще и потому, что укладывается в матрицу консервативного иерархического представления о мире. Это представление можно уложить в простую формулу. Имеется две группы людей (A и B) в иерархическом отношении A > B. Конфликт начинает с того, что B пытается эту иерархию нарушить и подняться на один уровень с A. Со стороны может показаться, что A просто пытается восстановить иерархию и поставить B на место. Но, с точки зрения A, формула выглядит сложнее: C > A > B. Имеется группа C, которая сильнее A и давит на A, чтобы защитить В. Таким образом A оказывается зажатой в тиски. Она - жертва давления со стороны C и бунтует против этого давления. Для восстановление иерархических отношений с B ей необходимо подняться на более высокий уровень в отношениях с C. Но формула на этом не исчерпывается. Ведь A борется не за себя, а за группу D более низкого статуса в отношениях C > A > B > D. Поскольку А не понимает, зачем C вступается за B, она решает, что таким образом C просто пытается держать A в подчиненном положении, и воспроизводит свое понимание отношений C > A > B в отношениях A > B > D. Во всех этих отношений группы A и B реальные, а группы C и D могут быть мифическими и порожденными попытками понять мир через призму иерархического сознания.



Рассмотрим несколько конкретных примеров.

1. A - Россия. B - Украина. В представлении A, B - вассальное государство ("даже не страна"), которое обязано находится в иерархическом положении A > B. Украина бунтует, сбрасывая путинскую марионетку. Международное сообщество C (в лице, к примеру, вице-президента США Байдена), поддерживает B - непонятно зачем, но явно, чтобы ослабить A. A пытается поставить B на место, но для себя, а для защиты группы D - русскоязычных жителей Крыма и востока Украины. Таким образом ослабляется B и повышается статус A в структуре C > A > B > D.

2. A - Белые. B - Негры (и евреи). В представлении Ку-клукс-клана, поставить B на место в отношениях A > B им мешает государственная система правосудия C, которая непонятно зачем вступается за B. ККК поднимает свой статус, когда берет на себя функции правосудия, но делает это, вступаясь за группу D - беззащитных белых женщин, которых насилуют линчуемые. То, что отношения B > D могут быть фантазией (подобно фантазии об украинской фашисткой хунте, преследующей за русский язык), не имеет значения, потому что важно уложить всю схему в матрицу C > A > B > D.

3. A - люди, позволяющие себе политически некорректные высказывания. B - представители меньшинств, которых эти высказывания оскорбляют. Указать на то, что A ведут себя подобным образом просто потому, что в их представлении A > B, было бы слишком просто. На самом деле в представлении A над ними нависает группа C (общество в целом или мифические "Social Justice Warriors"). C якобы вступается за B, но на самом деле (как догадывается A) просто пытается загнобить А. Но A борется не за себя, а вступается за группу D - тех представителей большинства, кто не может позволить себе некорректных высказываний и находятся на самом деле в менее привилегированном положении, чем пролезшие вперед из-за политической корректности меньшинства B: C > A > B > D.



На днях скоропостижно скончался русский националист Константин Крылов, породивший знаменитый мем РЛО ("Русских Людей Обижают!"). Характерное высказывание:

Итак, имеются обиженные русские (D), допущенные "до каши" нацменьшинства (B) и таинственные силы, которые поддерживают эту несправедливую систему (C). Между C и B для защиты D вклиниваются отважные русские националисты A вроде Крылова и раскрывают глаза на чудовищную несправедливость.

The most far-fetched, difficult to sustain, and yet most central and important premise of QAnon is that Donald Trump is actually a benevolent heroic genius who has waded fearlessly into the midst of the dark underbelly of politics and power and attained the office of President with the blessed enabling of God. All branches of QAnon seem to agree that Trump is covertly overseeing the liberation of the “Mole” children, and the liberation of humankind from the bloody hands of the Cabal, all of whom will be arrested any day now and sent en-mass to the Guantanamo Bay prison. QAnon devotees argue that Trump has been misunderstood- that he only sounds and behaves like a self-centered clueless buffoon because he is cleverly keeping the Cabal confused and off balance. That his misspellings and typographical errors on Twitter are actually cleverly coded messages to his allies in the battle against evil. That he can tend to speak in fragmented sentences that don’t seem to make sense because he is actually sending information back from the future that we won’t be able to understand until later. That the wall he wants to build on the Mexican border is really to stop sex trafficking not merely displaced brown people hoping for a better life. Any unflattering situations that arise in the Trump presidency, and there have been many, (such as the Mueller investigation into campaign corruption, the Ukraine bribery for which he was impeached, the plethora of resignations in his cabinet, the arrests and convictions of several of his allies and henchmen), are all conveniently re-scripted in the QAnon narrative. Here, Trump is ushering in the Great Awakening of mankind, where evil is vanquished, where we will all be brought up to speed on the information and technologies that have been kept under wraps by the Cabal. We will have free energy, learn all about the aliens, learn to live in harmony and, strangely, considering the fervid repudiation of Socialism prevalent on QAnon threads, wealth will be distributed equally. The lion will lie down with the lamb, as it were. And many on the evangelical side of the QAnon community believe we will witness Trump rise up to Heaven and take his deserved throne “at the right hand of the Lord,” just as minister Pat Robertson “saw” in a dream.

There is a profound irony with QAnon that much of the allure for people participating in the movement is that they can feel they are fueling a movement for mass liberation, freedom, and safety for children, when the movement is actually aimed at trying to perpetuate and cement a nascent totalitarian regime in the USA that is actively stripping away rights and freedoms, destroying environmental protections and scarring thousands of immigrant children for life. QAnon adherents are agents of oppression when they think they are revolutionaries-inadvertent pawns in this administration’s autocratic endeavors.
Sexual exploitation and trafficking of children is a well known, well documented global reality. It’s also very true that thousands of children have been separated from their parents and held in cages on the southern border of the United States, even though the QAnon narrative denies this reality or explains it away somehow. There are plenty of rotten, terrible things going on in the world. There is a lot that we need to be actively condemning, writing about, and taking action to stop. There is great need for global citizens to rise up and fight against these travesties of justice and traumatic real-time horrors. But we can’t count on the QAnon faction for help in this fight. Perhaps this is the greatest tragedy: that otherwise conscious, motivated individuals with a passion for justice are so being so terribly and pointlessly distracted from the very real problems facing our society and planet. They are much too busy fighting an illusory crisis of their own fabrication. Too busy trying to patch up it’s glaring holes. Too busy trying to rescue imaginary children and much too busy trying to rescue the image of their God-like leader from the tarnishing of his own relentless buffoonery.
