Collected Works
Some little boys collect army figures; others, baseball cards. They, I imagine, would, in their teens, embrace an open interest in guns, or sports. As a kid, I wanted nothing to do with guns, and the only sports I liked were jump-roping and tetherball, “soft-contact” sports that did not require talent or hand-eye coordination ( Read more... )

At a party tonight I found a penny from 1950 (with the "ONE CENT" back) and asked whether I could have it. Yep. Coin collecting. The hobby of a true winner.

Oh, I like to pick up and save those old pennies too. Not that I ever intend to do anything with them other than save them in a jar and remind myself not to wrap them up in penny rolls... but I feel weird just spending them.

Same thing with those special quarters with the drummer on the back.

I keep those ones too :) my Gram collects quaters and pennies so it kind of rubbed off on me.

My grandfather on my mom's side was a postman, and so I was kind of randomly inserted into philatelics too--unfortunately, my "collection" was... well... not so much a collection as it was one of those Kmart photo albums with the sticky pages filled with cancelled 2 cent stamps from god-knows-when.

Nothing really ever diverted my attention from it--I think I just sort of realized on my own that it was retarded.

Yeah, see, I sort of wish I had come to my own realization. Unfortunately nothing so stunning ever struck me. Though I did have a pretty full book of stamps from a good number of places I'll likely never visit.

The most unusual one that I can remember was shaped like a banana and was from Tonga. I'm pretty sure the only reason that Tonga exists, and the primary means that it has of supporting itself, is the export of wonky stamps.

I have the banana Tonga stamp! That's like, one of my favorites. The hilarity of non-rectangular stamps provided me much enjoyment.

You're probably right. I know of no other national export of Tonga besides banana-shaped stamps. But hey, the guy who made the smiley-face sticker has this gargantuan mansion back in Westlake, and clearly banana stamps would be significantly more popular than those...

... a good PR firm and I imagine anyone would be able to set up a small country in the islands of the South Pacific.

do you get kicked out of the hip gay la crowd if they find out you made a Brewster's Millions reference?

have you considered applying for a writing job at woot.com?

Oh, that stamp is more than a Brewster's Millions reference.. actually, it was in the news recently, I guess some collector bought up as many as he could and a particular stamp sold for some incredulous amount at Sotheby's. I used to know the name of it, too, but I can't remember.

But, I would probably get kicked out of whatever hip crowd I'm in, if I were in a hip crowd. I'd kick me out for that.

What is woot.com?

It is for electronics, but the reviews are comical...?

It seems so counterintuitive that they would have a tongue-in-cheek review of a sub-woofer, but I guess no one can lament that the descriptions, if you will, "read like stereo instructions."

I collected (and still do) crosses. I wanted to collect crucifixes but my mom wouldn't allow the cross with Jeebus ON it, into the house.

Actually, I think that's kind of a neat collection. Large crosses? Or just the small ones? I can see that a bunch of crucifixes would be disconcerting, though.

"I just don't like there being so many Jesuses around, that's all."
"Aw, mom. Don't mind him, he's just hanging around."

I didn't mention it, but in my teen years I collected "Do Not Disturb" hangtags from hotels, but I guess that was more of an angsty reflection on not wanting to be disturbed than anything else.

Keys? Like, card keys? Don't they charge for their removal?

Haha, that's reason enough to stay there, for that particular door hanger.
