My pug max is suffering from what the vets say is a food allergy. His stomach, armpits, face are all hairless and he constantly is scratching them, and he's got a chronic double ear infection. The Vet has put him on Ultra Allergen free Z/D pet food from Hill's Science diet and said it would take about 3-4 months to clear up, but it hasn't and it' ( Read more... )

my friend's yorkie has the same thing and i think they told him it was a food allergy, too. they're not putting her on special food, though, because the stuff the vet suggested was way expensive and they can't afford it right now.

it's not much help, but you're not alone :)

Oliver has a skin allergy and has been taking Atopica (at $95 a month!!!). I haven't noticed much improvement so I stopped the treatment because its been over 6 months and waaaay too much money. BUT one thing that the pet dermatologist has suggested and has worked for the itching was Benedryl. Also another friend has her dog on a raw food diet and that has TOTALLY improved both her pugs' skin and itching problems. So I second the above comment. Best of luck and keep us posted!

I gave mine cooked rice w/ hamburger & extra vitamins & it cleared up in about 3 weeks..... It's usually the wheat that causes the problems. We also put Crisco on it to help keep it from getting dried out & help it heal...Crisco has amazing healing abilities!
Hope your baby gets better soon.

I did the same thing with Shmooey--hamburger and rice and veggies (carrots, green beans, etc.) His problems cleared up and he developed an extraordinary smooth and silky coat. It seemed to me that he was allergic to chicken, so I took him off that. I really recommend the "real food" diet. I have qualms about raw food (because of the state of the meat industry today and the filth and contamination of the food that comes out of it), but I honestly believe that you can't go wrong by getting away from the commercial food and going natural. It takes a little bit more work, but not a whole lot,and it's actually cheaper than commercial food.

I haven't had any allergy probs since I started feeding them the Rice Hamburger & veggies. Your right it takes a bit more work....but I cooked for the 2legged kids for years & I like the 4legged ones better, so what the heck. ;-)

we've tested for that multiple times and it's always come back negative. It's the pattern that leads us to believe it's an allergy, only on his belly, neck, and he chews on his feet and he's got ear infections pretty much non-stop.
