Tea Shopping in Xi'an, Tea Shopping in Chengdu (so far)

Oct 23, 2006 13:47

So...a little message from the beyond. I know that marshaln has been giving you guys our updates from Beijing, but I thought I'd let you know how my tea adventures have been going since then. Before I get into where I went in Xi'an and Chengdu, some observations ( Read more... )

hi all. sorry to have been "away" for a bit; busy with school and other things...

bears, thanks for the thorough and informative post.

i hate to jump in from out of the blue with a critical comment, but frankly, i was disappointed to see you use the word "cunt" in your post. i don't know if any of the female members of this forum were offended, but it certainly makes me uncomfortable--especially in a post from the forum's founder and moderator.

again, apologies for having been absent for a bit, then returning to take issue with use of language in this way (despite my absence from active posting, i have continued to read postings on the forum). it's just that i tend to think of that particular epithet as being sexist in the extreme--potentially on par with the strongest of racist terms. but perhaps others don't share that perception?

comments?

If the salesperson was a man, and b3 called him a dick, would that be more or less offensive?

"Gay sex is disgusting. Unless it's lesbians. That's hot." --Dave Chapelle.

I dont really care either way personally.

I just find it interesting how gender influences how we perceive things.

hmm. i think the gender-based power differential is notable here, as is the surrounding historical context. it's not exactly the same thing to call someone a dick as it is cunt. in my view, it's equivalent to the difference between calling someone "whitey" vs other ethnic insults: they're all racial insults, but based on context and history one carries a different sort of weight than the others.

Maybe it would've been better if BBB called all the male shopkeepers who try to cheat him cunts, and then all the female ones dicks.

Either way... I understand your concern, psychopuncture, and I think I'd share your opinion insofar as that word (and any such similar thoughts) should probably not make it on the front page of this community.

Howdy, Bears,

Thanks for the great update. I love to hear of your experiences with Mainland tea merchants; it sounds as if you're well-equipped to deal with them.

How have you been getting around between Beijing, Xi'an, and Chengdu? The flights are convenient, which is what I suspect you've been taking, but I can thoroughly recommend the sleeper train service if you want to kick down a few gears and enjoy some lovely scenery.

Travelling by sleeper train feels like a romantic voyage, for me, and few countries do sleeper trains better than the Chinese (though don't go for anything less than the highest class sleeper, which is very cheap by Western standards).

Anyway, keep up the good work! Next stop, Kunming?

Zaijian,

Hobbes

Oh, by the way, while you are in Sichuan, have you tasted any local tea flavors like the Mengding yellow tea or the Emei Shan Bamboo Tea that we like from WHF :) ?

You probably did but excluded them in your account since this is a a pu'er board. If you didn't, well, I hope you will. There is more to life than just pu'er, you know :)

Phyll,

Have you come across a good Internet vendor for Zhuyeqing yet? My Chengdu stash is getting a bit on the low side!

Hobbes,

I know that Teaspring.com carries a grade of 2006 Ming Qian Zhu Ye Qing, though I've never tried this tea from them. Daniel Ong is the proprietor, and he's been most helpful and responsive in my previous dealings with him (I read the accusation on RFTD, but it was unfounded). He lives in the US (California?), but his tea ships from Guangzhou.

I don't know of any other online vendor without doing some googling or browsing around. Perhaps others here can recommend, too.

Best,

Phyll
