So those of you who follow me on Twitter have probably heard me talk a lot about The Fic That Ate December.

This is it.

Mith and I spent a month in a writing frenzy. I can't remember the last time I needed to tell a story this desperately, and I can't remember the last time I was this proud of something I wrote. I hope you guys have as much fun ( Read more... )

...I really really want to read this. Unfortunately, I only just finished The Hunger Games and now am desperately scrambling to get my hands on Catching Fire. But once I inevitably finish those in record times as I did the first book, I will get right on this fic like nobody's business.

I just want to let you know: everything you said about the books was right. My faith in the YA genre, it hath been restored. OH MY GOD. 8D

I love this bandwagon. SO MUCH. <3

YEAH AREN'T THESE BOOKS KIND OF BEAUTIFUL oh Christ I love them so much I can't even. They've made me want to write again, and gah, I can barely articulate how wonderful that feels. I hope you get your hands on CF and Mockingjay soon, because oh man, the things they do to the premise of the first book.

And I hope you enjoy this story when you do get around to reading it. *grins* I'm not going to finish posting this to LJ until next week, and who knows, you might be finished by then.

THEY KIND OF ARE. I mean, usually it's got all the contrived makings of just another post-apocalyptic YA novel trying to be badass but this just gets it all right. And is in fact badass. (The sad thing is, I watch a lot of reality tv and much of the behaviors of the audience and producers are so familiar...it creates this scary slippery slope warning. D: ) I can see how these books must inspire writing. Collins does great things with words.

Oh I'll be finished. Don't worry. :D

The commentary on reality TV and consumer culture -- on societies that basically sustain themselves by feeding off others -- is absolutely brilliant (and why I always kind of go :/ when people compare the series to Battle Royale, because the two comment on such different things). Collins said the inspiration for The Hunger Games came from her flipping from news about the Iraq War on one channel to a reality TV show on another, and I can definitely see it.

It's very hard to put them down once you've gotten started, isn't it? *grins* Gaaaah, these books.

Thank you so much, seriously. I got completely sucked into this world and these books when I started reading, and I don't think I've quite emerged from that headspace yet, so I'm always thrilled to hear that what I loved so much about the canon is present in what I write for it.

Finnick -- oh lord, Finnick's arc breaks me. It's masterfully done, but ow, and working on this story with that at the forefront definitely hurt. But I was so captivated by what we saw of Finnick and Annie in the books, and Mith and I got crazy-driven to tell their story in spite of that, or because of it. And when we started outlining this, we couldn't keep Katniss's comments about how victors' kids are disproportionately more likely to get selected for the Games out of our heads.

I'm really glad you're enjoying this so far, and I hope you keep doing so!

Understood. Time is, after all, a bitch. I hope that impression holds when you sit down and read it. Labor of love, this thing, with emphasis both on labor and love.

(...probably. Finnick's life is, er, not the easiest. *understatement*)

I'm as weak to things involving the sea as you are hi, England and I love bringing that in when I write Finnick -- he's such a water creature, and well, I already mentioned the Finnick-as-selkie thing to you on Twitter last night. I'm glad you're intrigued by Annie, because (obviously) there's a lot more of her on the way.

Chapter two goes up tonight, so hopefully the wait won't be too strenuous!
