I always knew concert promoters were money grabbing bastards, but this just takes the garibaldi. Promoter AEG Live, the people behind the mammoth run of Michael Jackson concerts scheduled for the O2 this year, faced with the prospect of having to refund hundreds of thousands of pounds to fans devestated by the fact they won't see their hero live ( Read more... )

If I were a ticket holder, I would get my refund in quick. It has been reported that the promoters are out of pocket by 300 million and were unable to find anyone willing to insure the concerts against cancellation.

Apparently they were insured for the first ten shows and "self insured" the rest. Ooops....

In a way I don'#t blame them seeing as their facing potential losses of several hundered million. At the same time, this is breathtaking cynicism. No doubt whoever wrote the line about 'reverence and respect' will no doubt win some kind of PR award.

I saw a report of this on the Guardian website earlier today, and literally had to look at it twice to make sure I'd read it properly! Jaw-dropping. If anyone goes for that ruse, I'll lose the last slivers of faith in humankind I have left. :-)

I find it hard to summon up much sympathy for the out-of-pocket promoters, too.

Its not even that they are getting something special. These are the tickets that they would have received in due course to attend the concert, which have been printed but not yet issued to the people who have paid for them. They are not asking people to give up their right to a refund for a special "lenticular" souvenir item - its just the effing ticket!
