Items for discussion:

What are zombies? Specifically, are they alive or are they somehow just animated corpses? If they are animated corpses, where does the energy needed to move around and freak out come from? Presumably food is required for their sustained existence/comfort. How much?

questions 1&2

Perhaps they are animated corpses, used as vessels by a virus. Or rather, by several different viruses that have evolved to seek out brains that are no longer producing neuro-transmitters. They reactivate the brains to use whatever remaining neuro-transmitters are there. (In some forms, possibly) As the virus reproduces, the offspring inhabit other tissues where neuro-transmitters are scarce, thereby requiring the ingestion of living brain tissue for continued survival.

If zombies are actually new organisms, as The Land of the Dead makes it appear, what is their relationship to humans, exactly Are zombies reliant on human beings for the perpetuation of their species? Zombies can only reproduce when dead humans transform. Isn't the prosperity of human beings central to the survival of zombies? Isn't a total war, in which all humans are destroyed, counter-productive to zombie evolution ( ... )
