Ah.

A kindred but overly affectionate spirit within the police force has agreed to commit suicide along with me when the problem resumes, assuming all other routes fail.

If things remain as they are, it's inevitable that we'll be insufficiently prepared for next time, leading to chaos and mass despair! It's better to anticipate all possibilities now, in case ample preparations aren't made for the next time.
