I never got the feeling Paul was trying to put across a message as he was just going for strong satire. When you look at it that way, the movie is actually a lot more fun to watch. It is all the more rewarding when you see Barney(who is this Doogie person people talk about?) acting as a narrow-lined psychic. Legen..wait for it, and I hope you aren't lactose intolerant as it ends with..dary!
Any new film version of "Starship Troopers" wouldn't really be a reMAKE, per se, if the people behind it are looking to just make another film adaptation of a story that just so happened to have been made into a film once before. Every new film version of Frankenstein is just another film adaptation of the original Mary Shelley story; "The Last Temptation of Christ" isn't a remake of "Jesus Christ: Superstar."
Along these same lines, John Carpenter's "The Thing" isn't a remake. "The Fly" isn't a remake. These are films based on source material that just happened to have been made into films once before . . .
I do always laugh at the kid getting his infantry assignment and the recruiter cheerfully telling him that infantry made him the man he is today....a cyborg with prosthetic legs and one arm......
"There's also no moral ambiguity, as the enemy is hostile with no other apparent goal other than "destroy all humans," "
Humanity invaded their homeworld. We are the villains - they are defending themselves! Our entire justification for invading is 'a meteor hit Earth' - it isn't even made apparent that they had anything to do with it. Oh and they have lots of resources Humanity wants.
Joining the general calvacade, it's not really obvious that the bugs fired the first shot - after all, the movie opens with a human colony 'inside the Quarantine Zone'.

It is a fantastic anti-war movie.
