Post-Apocalypse

Hm. When I was a teen in the 80's, I read the first few books in a "men's adventure" series set in the PA future... all I recall is that most folk had Mad Max souped-up cars, but one loser had a car powered by an elevator hoist motor, which despite it's power, moved veeeerryy slowly. And there were a pair of mute twin killing machines, one of whom in the second or third book got killed. Any of this in your books? I've been wondering for years now what series this was.

I haven't seen them yet, but "the Trader" has a bunch of "battle-wags" at his disposal, which are modified military transports of some kind.
And speaking of vehicles, I just ran across an image that I've lost the link to, but I liked the visual. It had a post-apoc blimp made using some kind of schooner or tugboat as the cabin, and the central stack was where the fire came from to provide the heated air for the gasbag. It looked pretty awesome.
The bikes make more sense to get around inside the compound quickly. Or someone early on guessing they might be fast enough to outrun the dinos.
I think the premise is the rift is fixed in time....you can't reopen it to a hundred years later when there are cities. But it would make more sense to be working on that instead of a two-way portal.

I was figuring they'd use 3-wheelers or quad-runners, though.
As for the rift, I thought there was some time-distortion present, as Taylor arrived and had to spend several months surviving on his own before the people who were "right behind him" showed up.
I thought that if that's the way it works, time appears to move 'faster' at Terra Nova than it does in the future, such that one could wait for more to develop. But I may have missed (or they might not have gone over) the fine details of the gate; they're just now putting forth the idea that it could be possible to return to the future.

I'd have to look at stats on speed and maneuverability for the different types of bike. I always wondered why they didn't use some kind of bike or atv on Stargate though, so I kind of like that they have them on Terra Nova.
Ah. I thought they said that they were having trouble keeping the rift open...ie Taylor stepped through and before anyone could follow it slammed shut again and they couldn't send the rest of the first team. I may be making that up, though, I'd have to rewatch.
You've actually listened a Deathlands book and lived to tell about it? You're a far braver guy than I would be. (But if you end up taking a job as a truck driver hauling Sam's Club kiosks around the country, we will have to disown you.)
Truck stops also have hilarious movies to go with the audio books. I fell down laughing in at a Pilot Truck Stop (Exit 43 on Interstate 70 heading out of Kansas City to St. Louis) where they had the movie, Hobo with a Shotgun. Apparently it was made this year.
I actually saw trailers and a lot of excitement for Hobo in some quarters. :) I'm betting it's a Grindhouse-style thing.
And yeah, the "Deathlands" books are hard to get into. I keep hearing long, LONG background monologues from various characters whose only hobby (other than shooting at things) seems to be telling anyone they meet everything they know about everywhere they've been. I guess the author was worried we'd forget that most of the world was messed up from the apocalypse or something.
