Winter recs (3/3) and last recs post of the year

Dec 30, 2018 14:51

Nothing from this year's Yuletide - I haven't ventured to look at what's there yet. Fanart, fanvid and fanfiction recs in the following fandoms: The Hobbit (movies), Lost in Translation, The Man from UNCLE (film), The Martian (film), Marvel Cinematic Universe, Once Upon a Time, Pacific Rim and Sherlock.

The Hobbit (movies)

Unexpected Valentine 2: shahrezad1 (Fíli/Sigrid)

I like the idea of this ‘Valentine’s card’ and the execution.

Lost in Translation

Green Light: Nicole Anell (Charlotte/Bob)javascript:void(0);

This vid featuring a well-chosen instrumental cover is so sympathetic to the movie, its themes and characters.

The Man from UNCLE (film)

on the one side is before on the other side is after: yourareiron_andyouarestrong (Gaby/Illya, teen, paranormal fantasy AU)

I didn't know I wanted this AU so much, but the paranormal elements mixed with the 60s spy setting worked beautifully, especially on the characterisation front. I love the mythical/fairy tale feel, the ferocity and gentleness of what developed between Illya and Gaby. The endnote suggests the writer planned more for this verse, but it ends on a satisfying note. (It could have done with a beta reader for minor errors.) And if anyone wants to rec 60s set paranormal romance with or without espionage profic, please feel free.

The Martian

Oh man! Look at those cavemen go: fallingvoices (Mark-centric, background Chris/Beth, long)

I really respect the amount of work that went into this fic, which tells the story of Mark and Ares III’s return and him dealing with what happened through ‘found’ texts - transcripts of his recordings, parts of interviews, digital messages etc. Mark’s voice rings out throughout.

Siding Stars: alessandriana (gen, I’d rate it a teen, quite long)

An absorbing space equivalent of case fic, engaging because of the heavy use of Watney’s voice and as with the previous rec I'm impressed at the research work and thought to get the science etc right, or credible, then (although other is stronger on the variety of narrative devices to tell the story).

Marvel Cinematic Universe
Captain America

The Simple Secret: roboticonography (Steve/Peggy, strong teen, longish)

Loved the detail, particularly the well-thought-through implications of the serum for Steve; the incisive turns of phrase, how vividly Peggy is conjured up; and the lightly worn research to make the period come alive.

Avengers

The Last Border Town Hotel: ignipes (Natasha-centric gen, teen, long, spoilers for the Avengers movie.)

I very much enjoyed this. (It's kind of been jossed? but) Natasha's POV was entirely credible, and all the relationships, not just hers with Clint, which is central to the fic, but with Fury and most of all Coulson, were beautifully done.

Once Upon a Time

Double Vision: intrikate88 (Belle/Rumplestiltsking, I believe this was speculative post 'Skin Deep' fic that I think was jossed, but a plausible variation)

This is haunting, Belle's interaction with Gold-Rumplestiltskin was increasingly lovely and heartbreaking.

Pacific Rim

This is How You Will Grow Up: Margo-Kim (gen, Mako-centric, pre-canon)

The second-person POV works well here. I felt the force of Mako's grief, the influences moulding her, and, of course, how she is still beloved too.

Sherlock

but you say that’s exactly how this grace thing works: wagamiller (Sherlock & Molly, can be read as Sherlock/Molly)

This missing scene from ‘His Last Vow’ is plausible and touching.

If you enjoy any of these fanworks, please encourage their creators by letting them know you did.
