Around the same time I was finishing Professor Layton and the Curious Village, I was also listening to the cast album of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and a couple of songs made me think of the game (especially since the show has the same sort of time period-feel as the game).

I'm usually pretty bizarre when it comes to connecting things to songs, but here's a couple anyways.
This goes without saying. And with that goes that one Salyu song that's in the trailer for the second game (if you don't believe me, check out the cover art.)
For some reason, this game also reminds me of Wake For Young Souls by Third Eye Blind. The bit about "the friends we know" makes me think of Flora wanting to keep the town living.
"People As Places As People" by Modest Mouse is a bit irrelevant, but some of the lyrics make me think of the townsfolk. ie:
To answer a question
It'll probably take more
If you're already there
Well then you probably don't know
could be interpreted as the robots not knowing why they talk in puzzles.
I think I'm reading into this a little bit too deeply.
