A couple of days ago, I was scratching my head and wondering why people were addressing me as male, and thinking "why is male the default gender?  Well, I never!"

Then I realized that I had a male avatar and a screenname that's connected to a male character and that some of my email addresses also sound male, and realized, "oooOOOOOoooo, yeah."

See I always figured fandom's the one internet space where everyone's assumed to be a lady unless they stand up and say otherwise. I definitely tend to assume that, at least.

Depends on the fandom. Some places on the internet most of the people writing for it are male. And back in the early days of anime fanfic, most of the authors were male. And with MLP fandom, which Prof is in, there are a lot of men writing and squeeing about it. I know several who work at Otakon.

I figured she meant LJ specifically, since she was posting this here, which at least in my experience has always been pretty female-heavy.

HP fandom, on the other hand, skews female. There are exceptions, but at any gathering, there's likely to be a lot of women, some of them writing slash (oh nooez!)
