So uh yeah. Fandom wins hands down!
Why you may ask?
Well first fandom introduced me to
spikess who introduced me to fanfiction. But also fandom has given me an outlet in my RL. Once I got into fanfiction I became more of a fan of the horror genre. So when "Supernatural" came out I was interested but at the time I was angry with the WB for constantly canceling shows I loved. "Supernatural" sounding like the most interesting new show but because WB had pissed me off I was only going to give it one chance to win me over. If I didn't like the first episode I wasn't gonna watch it again. Then of course there was the teaser thing right before the pilot air that first night.
...Shut off the lights- thing... That right there somehow hooked me from the get go.
WARNING cut for length and spoilers to the teaser scenes of the pilot episodes of Buffy, Rescue 77, Angel, and Roswell. Mild general spoilers for Supernatural, Leverage and a mystery movie.
It seems every time I really love a show it's the first 2-10 minutes that wins me over.
Buffy= No name guy and Darla in the darkened halls of Sunnydale High. And oops she's a vampire. Boy dead.
Rescue 77= My introduction to Christian Kane. March 15th of 1999. Mere months before I graduated high school. (Sidetrack: OMG I feel old!) This one opens with Chris' character Wick waking up late and needing to be at work in 15 minutes. Let's just say the watching Wick get ready and race to work and putting his socks on while driving, was one thing. Him getting there on time and give his Chief that smirky grin priceless.. But then mere moments later you see Wick walk on his hands to. Now I've never see CK do that in anything he's done since but lemme tell ya... If that pops up on "Leverage" I while probably die. Why? Well because I've watched him in enough different roles to know stupid things about how he acts. Something I can usually do with any actor provided the roles aren't all the same. But for some odd reason Wick walking around on his hands makes me grin like nothing else.
Angel= David's voiceover. Angel sitting at the bar in LA, seemingly drunk outta his mind. Then he turns and gets up and is so amazingly hot it took me a second to realize that the dumb frat boy types were vampires. Then god that alley scene.
Roswell= Really. Starts with a voiceover of what Liz is writing in her journal, then the flashback to the shooting. Ordinary day at a diner in Roswell. Hmmm couple guys start arguing. Gun is accidentally fired and then lookie here it's Max and Michael from school. And somehow Max saves Liz's life. Not the greatest character emotion-wise but still much with the intriguing me and well I kept watching.
So there's Supernatural, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel the Series, Rescue 77, and Roswell. All old favorites of mine and every one of them won me over the very first night it aired in the first 2-10 minutes.
So now why does any of this matter?
Well can't truly say "Leverage" won me over exactly like that. I loved it originally on the pure basis of CK being in it. But the first 15 minutes of the pilot definitely won me over like all the others.
Cut to tonight.
Well here you go folks I finally sat down and watched the wonderful movie that's been on my harddrive for a couple months. Any guesses. Here's a clue. Blue mohawk. How about now guesses?
Why yes
spikess and
woodsbaile_02 and
bloodyrosered, I did happen to sit my ass in front of the computer tonight and watched "TEN INCH HERO"!!!
*laughs* New favorite movie! anyone else think it seemed kinda like "Empire Records"? Sure TIH it's just roughly one day like Empire supposedly is but the same basis is there. But gods I love it. Why did you guys let me wait so long??? But then I wouldn't have watched it on New Years Eve. I wouldn't have gone an icon hunt because somehow I couldn't find any TIH icons or pics on the computer... And I wouldn't have found the pretties I found like the icon I used on this post.
Still wondering why "Ten Inch Hero" has anything to do with SPN, BtVS, etc?
Well here's why.
Acathla was watching Buffy when it first aired on March 10th of 1997. I happened to walk in just as it started and watched the opening scene I described above.
Buffy lead to "Rescue 77" because it was on the same network. "Rescue 77" lead to my love of CK. Buffy and "Rescue 77" lead to "Roswell," again because it was the same network. Obviously Buffy lead to "Angel". My love of Buffy, Roswell and Angel lead me to my best friend
spikess, who showed me the wonderful world of fanfiction and then later Livejournal. By May of 2004 I was angry at the WB for either giving the show to another network, where it died, or canceling it. By May of 2004: Buffy, Rescue77, Roswell, and Angel- had all been canceled. I wasn't going to start watching any new show on the WB ever again unless it sounded truly spectacular.
One full TV season later, there was "Supernatural." Jensen and Jared who I'd seen on "Smallville" and "Gilmore Girls" but had really care much about because honestly those roles are a joke compared to SPN... The boys amazed me and there I was with a shiny new obsession to join my CK obsession. Finding out that Chris and Jensen actually knew each and had for years, well I lost braincells. That lead to RPS fic and intense love of Chris and Jensen.
This year saw the return of Chris to the small screen with "Leverage." Gods I love that man. But every one of these lead to me watching "Ten Inch Hero."
For without one of those steps I might not have heard from nice people like
killerweasel that Jensen was in a movie called "Ten Inch Hero." And I surely wouldn't have acquired the movie online. And I would have never seen the awesomeness of Priestly or the kilt or the tattoo or the mohawk or the dancing....
So thoughts. Awestruck are you that I posted this long of a post? Well I am. Awestruck at the way I can trace my current happiness to a spring night in 1997. 12 years ago this coming March. I can remember normal real life events some in part because they related to these. I graduated the same time that the Buffy and Roswell gangs did. I was going through the same college problems when Buffy was. I learned how dark the 'real world' is with Angel. Supernatural gave me conventions and generous friends I never dreamed I'd have. Supernatural gave me one of my 'TV boyfriends' as
gigglingkat calls them. "Leverage" return another 'TV boyfriend' to me.
"Ten Inch Hero" made me worship Jensen for taking a role like that and wearing the kilt and having mohawks. But now I wonder. I've seen a fic somewhere that was Steve/Jensen (I believe) where Jensen had the TIH mohawk. Please flist- is there Chris/Jensen fic set during the filming of TIH??
Hmm that epic-ness of how fandom made my world better and lead to my happiness this New Years, was over 1200 words long. I must be crazy.
Again Happy New Year everyone. I hope 2009 is like what
spikess just said on the phone it would be. She said years that end in nine are awesome. And well I graduated in 1999. As we saw here in this post we got Roswell and Angel in '99.
2009 is my ten year reunion for high school (should that even have it.) In March of 2009 I'll celebrate my fifth anniversary on LJ. Four days later I'll cross another 10 year mark- ten years of being addicted/obsessed and generally over the moon about Christian Kane. I'd say if anything this new year should be damned interesting fandom-wise! As for real life in 2009... We'll just take it one day at a time and try to hold on to the ledge rather than fall of it.
...Gotta go, gotta go, gotta rodeo...
