Tab needed to take a break from all the handshaking. She was wondering if it was possible for her face to be strained from all the smiling too. It wasn't so much that she was ungrateful to Aiden for setting this whole thing up and letting her meet some real movers and shakers. It was just that she wasn't built for the PR. Not without letting a few choice words slip, and it was nearly killing her trying to keep the four-letter words out of her vocab.
Then there was the fact that her and Luke were only managing to steal five minutes here and there. She excused herself from a lobster and took her leprechaun arse off to the quiet corner she spotted her brother in. She flopped down in the booth beside him and let out a sigh. "I thought a bloody party was supposed to be fun? I'm fucking working my arse off."
"That's only a bad thing if you make it one," Riley pointed out. "And you had notice. He didn't when he met me and look what he came into? The guy rightfully had reason to run screaming into the night and not look back. But it was never a question for me whether I'd like him or approve of him. Didn't even cross my mind, actually. I just wanted to know he was going to treat you right and make you happy."
"That's true. I guess I just didn't really think about it like that. It's not like I was going to hate Evie." Tab moved to lean against her brother. "I just want it to be perfect."
"It is already, isn't it?" Riley asked with a smile. "At the very least, you're on the right road. I see the way you look at each other. Have a quick look over there at Pat and Aiden." He pointed to the couple who were wrapped around each other, smiling and in a deep conversation, oblivious to the crowd around them. "That's what you and Luke look like."
Tab followed Riley's finger and watched the couple. She twirled her hair around her finger before she smiled and looked back at her brother. "That's really what we look like? That's pretty awesome. That's what you and Evie look like too, you know."
Riley laughed softly. "Well, after everything, I still manage that, maybe I'm not a total lost cause. And Tara and Lachlan still look like that, a year and a half after they got together. So, think about it, squirt. There's hope. You've got the right mix at the start. I think you're in it for the long run and I'm glad. It's about time someone showed you how nice all this is."
"You could never be a lost cause, beanpole." She nodded. "I hope so. I kind of can't imagine my life without him. I know I said that before about... well, you know. But this time I really, really can't. Me and Luke have hardly spent any time apart, and I don't exactly want that to start now. Though I guess once the album is launched and stuff there'll be some touring to do."
Riley pressed his lips together for a moment. "You didn't know anything but Walker, but he was never perfect for you. If he was, you would've realised long ago, not eight years done the track and not even know how to tell him. It's a book closed. It's time to feel the real thing now and you've got it. Luke just wants you to have the whole world."
He looked over a Luke, dressed as a rockstar and laughing at something Benny was saying. He nodded. "That's going to be hard. He can't really go on the road with you. His income is in this place."
"I'll take whatever he wants to give me, but I want to give him the whole world back in turn." She looked at Riley, and smiled a little. "Guess the world's just going to keep getting passed back and forth between us. I really do love him."
Tab's eyes found her boyfriend as well and she couldn't quell the sudden rise of emotion that threatened to choke her. She tried to laugh it off, but realised her voice was cracking slightly. "Hasn't even happened yet and I'm already going to cry. I've become such a sap."
Riley put his arm around her and squeezed her softly, planting a small kiss to her temple. "You've got a lot of changes ahead of you. It's good you've got a strong relationship foundation because it's going to be tested. If you want fame, that is. A balance needs to be found. You're stronger than I am. I like my own little bubble and being faceless Riley. I couldn't do what you're doing. We'll just have to learn how to make good use of the wireless internet."
Tab turned into him and slipped her arm around his waist as she hugged her brother. "I love you, faceless Riley. You're never faceless to me though. You're my Big Bro. Definitely going to be using the internet a lot. And you have to come see me sometimes, okay? Or I'll come to Princeton."
"Just promise me that if anything happens you'll just call me, and ask me to come home." She pulled back so he could see the seriousness in her expression. "I mean it, okay? No matter what's going on, or where I am just promise me that you'll ask me to come home if you need me."
Riley bit down on his lip. "Tab, if you're on tour, you can't just drop everything and come home like that. People pay money to see you, record sales depend on it. I can't promise you that. This is where the whole rock star thing loses it's shine a little. If you're going to do this, it has to be what comes first. People depend on it."
