Lachlan hovered in the doorway and chewed his thumbnail. "I dinnae know. She told me to choose. Ducks or turtles, Riley! I cannae take this kind of pressure!" he cried, starting to pace. "What if the bairn hates ducks? Or is scared of turtles? Turtles can be really scary things, aye? With their wee necks disappearing and all that. And ducks can bite. Plus there is an awful lot of blue. What if the bairn is a wee girl?"
Riley had to bite down on his lip to not laugh at Lachlan's anxiety. "Okay, one. Ducks don't have teeth, mate. Especially not these ducks in the picture. They're actually really cute little ducks. Two, these are gender-neutral rooms. A little girl or little boy would love them. You said Tara wanted colour and nothing gender specifc. These are great choices. Clowns are scary, mate. Not duckies or turtles."
Riley took Lachlan by the elbow and led him away from the pictures. "Okay, we'll do that in a minute. I've got a couple of gifts for you." He handed over a paper gift bag he'd brought along with him, hoping what was inside would help the situation a little. Nothing like a couple of novelty items to put a situation into perspection. Inside was a black t-shirt for Lachlan with a rather apt slogan on it. Underneath it was a gift for the baby to hopefully give Lachlan the boost he needed to help with the job at hand.
