Evie cleared her throat and reached for the remote to put the film on pause. She let out a small sigh as she turned to face Riley with an amused smile on her face. "Problem, sexy?"
Riley pulled a slightly sheepish face. "My stomach hurts. Does yours? Do you think that chicken was off?" he asked, wriggling in the seat again. He blinked. "The way you're holding that remote is giving me dirty thoughts."
Evie grinned as she looked at the remote and stroked her thumb gently across the buttons. "Is it? Enough to distract you from your stomach ache?" She shifted to rest her other hand on his thigh. "And no, I feel fine right now. I don't think it was the chicken."
"I think I'm doomed. The remote is a phallic symbol to me. This is what trying to matchmake Pat all day does to me." He rubbed his hand back and forth across his stomach. "Maybe just too much booze on the weekend. I can hardly even remember actually getting the tattoo."
"I'm not sure anyone really could. I guess I had to go to hell before I could crawl my way back. Denial wasn't going to cut it. For life is a long time to be in denial."
Evie smiled as she kissed the corner of his mouth. Clearly she wasn't worried about catching his germs. "You've done well being the protectee. I know you didn't want to be."
"It is, but you can still take all the time you need to adjust to everything. There isn't a rush."
Riley moved so he could put his head down on her shoulder. He curled up into as much of a ball as he could manage with his height. "I wish it could be different," he said in a small voice.

Evie gave a slight nod. "It does make sense. I wish I could have helped more."
