After reading "For Want of a Nail" I can't get enough of American-Mexican fusion empires. And there is simply not enough alternatehistory material about Old Northwest/Ohio Territory secession ( ... )

The story implies that the Pawnee, at least, control or have free use of the land north of the Red River. In my own notions, Burr's Mexican Empire winds up with a number of such marcher nations: Comancheria, Apacheria, etc.

This is a story that not only fulfills the iconic hero brief, but avoids all of the pitfalls of the alternative history sub-genre.

Seems like a well-done story; avoiding "as you know, Bob" is really hard to do (I've tried to write AH stories myself, and know ( ... )

I agree with you that Burr gets something of an unfair rap in general, and is unfairly neglected for his key role in thwarting Jefferson's attempt to purge the judiciary.

That said, if he conquered Mexico, he surely wouldn't institute a republic. Note that Bolivar, for example, became a dictator despite faultlessly republican ideology to begin with; and Bonapartism was in the air in 1806.
