What kind of person lists PhD (ABD) as their credentials? The kind of person who does not expect another PhD who actually busted out the paper to be reading it. Why? because PhD (All But Dissertation) = I didn't finish it... it is not a degree, but apparently now it is a "convention ( Read more... )

The dumbing down of that system has been going on for a long time. Your aggravation is 100% justified.

And this is how one of the prgretchin's teachers has their credentials listed on the school web page. She already has a problem with this particular teacher, and when I told them how we were helping her understand thier class better they totally did not back us up and told the prgretchin she should not have to do the kind of work that was actually HELPING her pass the class. Now she is failing again, and we parents need to meet... and looking up their edress on the web site I see that this is how they document their academic accomplishments. Sheesh.

I've heard of PhD's being cocky, but how does one get cocky when at most they can imply they have a PhD when IN FACT THEY DO NOT?!? Most people would not know what the ABD designation is, basically it is there to make the uninformed think they have a version of a PhD when in fact they have quit before finishing it. Good thing baby daddy is doing the talking in this one...

Morons...ABD on a cv is usually a red flag to me...posting it to try to advertise credentials is wrong...you are supposed to put doctoral student....or doctoral candidate if you have passed your quals....ridiculous....

"ABD" is supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek kind of comment--like the old joke that an ABD and a quarter will get you a cup of coffee. Why, in God's name, would you add a joke to your resume?

Even more ridiculous? If we're talking about an educator, there is a real degree--the CAGS--which doesn't require a dissertation, is professionally relevant, and actually exists.

Wow, I'm just a lame M.A. and even I know that's pretty gauche. :) You're either a PhD or you're not. ABD means that you're not FINISHED.
