Ok I'm waterlogged and I'm up to my ears in bbq but I'd really like to hear your two cents on something. Please be honest and I don't care who votes.

Keep in mind when I say "dating" I mean just that. Maybe times have changed from the 90's but dating and screwing were two different things in my high school ( Read more... )

I chose "other" meaning: I think the person who says something like that probably needs an attitude adjustment.

Ok but just tell me what you would think that person meant by saying that? Attitude aside. :)

At best, that the "bicycle" sleeps around a lot. At worst, or more specifically, someone who's being fucked by a lot of people, and then discarded, as if they're not a real human being. Perhaps I take the term too seriously, but it bugs.

By the way, your icon is wigging me out! ;)

*nods* It seems that if someone is the school bicycle that could apply to them dating a lot or being a mean person. If that's the truth then I must have be a freaking BMX bike with turbo action cause I know I'm not the nicest person sometimes.

Haaaaaa yeah that icon is a demented version of Alice in Wonderland's "Through the looking glass". :>

Back in my day (the dark ages)

That girl is the school bicycle = Everyone has had a "ride" AKA very promiscuous. Nothing to do with being used and/or a bitch; except when use to cast aspersions on moral character.

Thank you! Some people in this fandom have applied this term to mean that a person is callous or manipulative.

I went with what it usually means, but for some reason HP fandom seems to think that dating=screwing (and that all of that is intrinsically bad.)

And yeah, definitelly no victimization aspect. It's just a more graphic version of the word slut. (She'll let anyone screw her.) Yes it's used negativelly.

*disclaimer: I don't agree with the idea behind the phrase, etc.

Word. Ginny and Cho have dated the exact same number of men in the books(3), so they have a claim to the term because they're the ones who have dated around the most.

Um...what?

I don't know, I think I was trying to jump into the convo while also trying to make clear that I don't buy into the idea.
Bad ffr experience ranting about how clothes don't reflect sexual activty has made me overly concerned with making it clear I don't buy into this stuff. I guess this being the latest fad discussion is another reason I just want to make my opinion sort of clear.

Just some people are too ready to jump on everything.

I way I've heard it used, and the way I take it if someone says it, is that the girl in question is a slut. Everyone's had a ride. Nothing to do with being used, or being a bitch.
