Ok I'm waterlogged and I'm up to my ears in bbq but I'd really like to hear your two cents on something. Please be honest and I don't care who votes.

Keep in mind when I say "dating" I mean just that. Maybe times have changed from the 90's but dating and screwing were two different things in my high school ( Read more... )

I went with what it usually means, but for some reason HP fandom seems to think that dating=screwing (and that all of that is intrinsically bad.)

And yeah, definitelly no victimization aspect. It's just a more graphic version of the word slut. (She'll let anyone screw her.) Yes it's used negativelly.

*disclaimer: I don't agree with the idea behind the phrase, etc.

Word. Ginny and Cho have dated the exact same number of men in the books(3), so they have a claim to the term because they're the ones who have dated around the most.

Um...what?

I don't know, I think I was trying to jump into the convo while also trying to make clear that I don't buy into the idea.
Bad ffr experience ranting about how clothes don't reflect sexual activty has made me overly concerned with making it clear I don't buy into this stuff. I guess this being the latest fad discussion is another reason I just want to make my opinion sort of clear.

Just some people are too ready to jump on everything.

No I get what you were saying. I know I had a friend of mine where a short skirt and was called a slut at a club we went to. :\

I'm just disgusted that this type of thinking is still going on in today's world. Yes these are fictional characters but saying a girl is a slut for dating around will make me look at you different. If a person will apply that to a fictional character then what the heck do they think about women in real life? Just ugh.

Slut can also be sort of generic. I had a friend call me a slut cause I told his parents that he was smoking pot. Slut simply cause a girl dates is absurd, but even the whole notion of slut boggles. Just the whole notion doesn't fly in todays culture.

Maybe crit on someone for being sexually active would fly in a culture where it wasn't acceptable, but today? Come on, outside of certain communities, it's totally ok to be sexually active, so it's ridiculous to crit someone for actions that are within societal norms.

Then again, in a culture where it isn't acceptable, it goes back into being none of that person's business. It's only the business of the person and maybe the person they end up marrying. (Big maybe there.)(And maybe a parent in the case of a minor)
