The Things We Can't Control Master Post Chapter 15 ~Going Home~
God, he was exhausted. Kame hadn’t been kidding when he said he would get no sleep that night. But… even though the lack of rest had definitely made him irritable, he did somewhat regret being so harsh with Jin. It wasn’t Jin’s fault he hadn’t gotten any sleep. And Jin’s attitude… it wasn’t like he was being malicious. He just didn’t know.
JIn didn’t realize how damn lucky he had been in his life, never having to sink so low. Not that there wasn’t horrible things in the other man’s past - Kame had seen entirely too many scars on that broad chest when Jin had his shirt off in the church office to believe that - but the fact that Jin had such a resistance to the idea of ever selling himself meant he’d never been in a position to realize there were even worse things.
But Kame didn’t want to think about that anymore. Ever.
Why was it that no matter how far he came, he was still haunted by the things that had happened to him and the awful, unforgivable things he’d done…
Taking care to not wake the still-sleeping Jin, Kame crept past the bed to the phone and called the church.
“Domino’s Pizza. How may I take your order?” came Massu’s voice.
“Damn it, didn’t I say that wasn’t the proper way to answer the phone?” but Kame couldn’t keep a straight face and ended up laughing. It was comforting to think that some good, happy things never changed despite it all.
Grumbling, Jin rolled on his side facing Kame, whining, “Hey, keep it down! I just got to sleep…”
Ignoring the lout in the bed, Kame instead focused on the phone. “Get Koki for me, would you?”
The sound of the handset clattering down on the desk was followed shortly by the entirely-too-loud sound of Massu’s voice bellowing, “KOKI! PHONE!” Then silence. Massu didn’t even bother waiting for Koki to arrive before leaving the room.
Some things never change, indeed.
But eventually Koki’s voice came through the line, “This is Koki.”
“Hey, it’s Kame. I need a rescue,” Kame said.
“Oh my god, you guys got caught? He slowed you down, didn’t he? But Massu said…”
“No, not that kind of rescue!” Kame laughed, though he was touched by Koki’s concerned tone. He probably could have been a bit clearer, he supposed. “I just meant you can come get us now. We’re at…” but he didn’t see the motel name on anything. “Hey, lazybones, what was this place called?”
“Who are you calling lazybones?” Jin whined. “It’s your fault I hardly slept at all!” And he rolled back over. But since he didn’t answer the question, Kame poked his back and asked again. After the third time, Jin finally sat up and rubbed his eyes. “You’re so mean… a man’s gotta sleep…”
“Where are we?” Kame asked again, rolling his eyes. How was it his fault Jin hadn’t slept well?
“How the hell should I know?”
“Well, peek your head out the door and look for a sign or something, baka!” Koki’s laughter on the other end of the line was not helping his mood one bit. First thing he was doing when they got back was to take a nap. He wouldn’t be nearly so grouchy once he got some sleep.
Jin continued to grumble as he swung his legs around and pushed himself up to stand. Walking over to the door, he unlocked it and leaned out. “Says ‘Stanley’s Inn’ on the big sign. Plus, there’s a liquor store across the street and a check-cashing place with ‘Stanley’s’ written on them too.”
Kame relayed the information along with their room number to Koki, who promised to come get them as fast as he could. Before Kame could warn him to at least stick to the speed limit this time, Koki hung up.
Seriously, he needed to just call a gang meeting and teach the whole lot of them proper telephone etiquette. Ah, well. They took care of the important things, at least, and they were good to each other. He supposed he could tolerate a little rudeness so long as those two things stayed true.
A yawning Jin was eying him suspiciously. Finally, the older man said, “You really didn’t get any sleep, did you?” He actually looked concerned about it. Once again Kame found his opinion of him softening. Why could he never stay irritated at Jin for very long? God knows the guy did and said plenty of things that aggravated him, perhaps more than anyone he’d ever met…
But he found himself forgiving Jin each and every time he cooled down, almost without thinking.
Ah, well. “Nee… I’m sorry I got snippy last night.”
“It’s okay…” Jin said slowly. “I know I said something that upset you yesterday. And that aside… “ and he frowned, “You’re hurting.”
“What? No, I’m not. Well, not really, anyway. Not more than anyone else.” Kame shook his head. The intensity of Jin’s gaze was a bit uncomfortable. “I just don’t sleep well away from the church.”
“That’s what I meant…” Jin trailed off. The atmosphere was pretty awkward as neither of them spoke for a moment. Jin didn’t press the issue, thankfully.
And about thirty-five minutes of silence later, Koki showed up and the three of them piled into the Taurus and took off.

Jin was quite tired himself and ended up falling asleep again in the back seat on the drive back. Kame had to be even more tired; at least he had gotten some sleep whereas it seemed like Kame had gotten none. He didn’t understand why he cared so much, but he did. He cared. He tried to tell himself it was because Kizuna was the only way to save Tatsuya, but still…
So when… what was the lad’s name? Yuya something, right? Well, when he approached the car as they climbed out of it, waving at them in a friendly manner, “Hey, Kame! I think Ryo…”
Oh, that wouldn’t do. Jin just knew that if Kame went to talk to him, he’d get distracted by that, and then something else, and then something else, and the end result would be that Kame still wouldn’t have gotten any rest. So Jin positioned himself in front of Kame and interrupted, “Oh, no. You wait. He’s going to take a nap first.”
Kame tried to shove him out of the way as Yuya stopped midstride, hand still in the air. “I’ll be fine; I really need to talk to him about this,” Kame insisted.
But Jin put his foot down. “I don’t think so. You didn’t get any sleep at all last night. Bed. Now!” and he pointed towards the church door. How was Kame supposed to help come up with a brilliant plan to save Tatsuya if he was not well-rested? And since obviously the out-of-town robberies had settled (at least temporarily) Kizuna’s financial problem, it was about time to address that issue.
Yuya and Koki exchanged looks and then both turned back to Jin and Kame. Kame gave up trying to push Jin out of the way and instead just stepped around him. “Really, I’m f-”
Like hell. “Don’t make me carry you, because I will.” Why did the younger man have to be so damn stubborn? This was for his own good! Well, okay, it was also for his and Tatsuya’s good, but that didn’t change anything.
“I’d like to see you try!”
“Fine, I will!”
And Jin picked up Kame who started shouting to put him down almost immediately. One step after another, carrying an irate man doing his best to get Jin to drop him, towards the front door. The last thing he heard before he got Kame inside was Koki’s laughing, “I think we should keep him…”
When Jin got to the office, he pretty much just dropped Kame onto his sleeping mat.
“That hurt, you ass!” Kame snapped. “You have no right to interfere with Kizuna busi-”
“Don’t make me sabotage your lock to trap you in here. I’ll come wake you up in a couple hours.”
As he walked away, he heard Kame shout after him, “Get back here! I’m not done yelling at you!”
But Jin just kept walking, heading towards the kitchen with the intention of finding breakfast. He hoped Kame would actually try to get some sleep because Jin had decided to wash his hands of the whole mess. Ultimately, it was out of his hands anyway. He couldn’t force the man to sleep.
He’d done everything he could.

Once again pissed off at the older man, Kame still couldn’t believe he’d had to nerve to pick him up and carry him to the office. The only reason he’d been able to get away with it was because he took Kame by surprise. Right?
Right.
Still, his throat was sore from all the shouting at Jin and truthfully, he did feel about like he was going to pass out no matter what. Maybe it was a good thing Jin had put his foot down.
Oh, not that Kame would ever admit that out loud.
Pissed and touched in equal measure, Kame finally just rolled his eyes and locked the office door. He dropped the money pouches on top of the desk and curled up on his sleeping mat, pulling the blanket over his head to block out the light coming through the barred window behind the desk.
He must have been even more exhausted than he realized because all he knew was that he closed his eyes and then suddenly there was knocking at the office door. And when he pushed himself up, he saw the clock on the desk which told him he’d been asleep for four hours.
Well, better than nothing.

Chapter 16 ~Meeting Hina~ A/N: Sorry this is so short but typing is starting to really make this cat scratch hurt. She really, really doesn't like being put in the carrier and I felt so bad leaving her at the vet's office because she's so scared of that place... No choice, but still...
Anyway, yeah, so this isn't everything I wanted to be in this chapter because I also wanted to include the scene where Kame and Tegoshi talk and I wanted to put the meeting to discuss what to do first on the Tatsuya situation. But I guess it'll have to wait... Sorry.
