They had to shoot the season out of order in order to accommodate Amanda Tapping shooting the SG1 movie. That means, if you look at episodes like Missing and Reunion very carefully, you can already see Rachel's baby bump.
The original idea of the season was to make Rodney a father, but when Rachel announced her pregnancy they switched gears because they didn't want two main characters facing impending parenthood at the same time (I am forever grateful they dropped the Rodney as a father idea)
They had already written a dark arc for Teyla over the season, so they had to juggle it a little and incorporate the pregnancy into the season. I much prefer it this way because you have the darkness of Teyla's character balanced with the softness of her impending motherhood. Without the baby, I feel that she would have been taken to darker places and lost some of the audience.
Uh.. Rodney? father? OMG. Well, yes, I am glad, too, that they droped that. Jeez, Rodney as a father?! That seriously would make the show a little...well...soap-opera-like?! I mean that Teyla's pregnant is bad enough.
That's right. The best episode that showed that so far was "missing". I was shocked how Teyla (re)acted in this episode. Hopefully they will keep it that way and don't let her play the "mother" all the time. But I guess there will come some really good episodes with her this season :)
No, no...she will be dark (Dark Teyla!) but I think they cut back a little on the extremity of darkness that they originally plotted. She's on the whole revenge kick of "those who kidnapped my people are gonna pay and pay alot" balanced with "I am carrying what possibly might be the last of my people." It's a good dynamic.
