Cold/Allergy Symptoms @24 weeks

I had pregnancy rhinitis with my first and now at 24 weeks with my second, I'm beginning to feel some of the same symptoms. I'm producing a lot of mucous and my nose feels irritated all the time, like I'm about to sneeze (and I have been sneezing a lot...ouch!). With my first, these symptoms only got worse until I felt near-constant sinus ( Read more... )

I have terrible allergy symptoms that only got worse during pregnancy. My doctor told me to take Claritin (make sure it's the regular, not Claritin D) once I was in my second trimester. It has helped a lot!

Sudafed is safe, so is Zyrtec.

I don't think Sudafed is safe for pregnant women: http://www.drugs.com/pregnancy/pseudoephedrine.html

Because Zytec is an antihistamine, it can't really treat rhinitis. Your body is not having some sort of allergic reaction--the elevated estrogen levels are causing you to produce more mucous and your glands to swell.

If that's the case with Sudafed, it's new. I was advised to take it during both of my pregnancies. Just the four hour stuff and only a few doses (I had an awful cold once or twice). I know you can't take it when you're nursing, but I've never heard its not safe for pregnancy. My pregnancies were 3 and 5 years ago, though.

http://www.babymed.com/pregnancy-safety/how-safe-sudafed-pseudoephedrine-during-pregnancy. This article states the risk period as being the first 10 weeks of gestation, for what it's worth.

Can't help with the nasal stuff but when I was pregnant this last time I would drink Celestial Season's Sleepytime tea (regular *not* plus or extra or whatever it is). If it was particularly rough I'd take Hyland's Calms Forte (it was recommended to me by my midwife and seemed to do the trick). If it's restless leg, liquid calcium magnesium can help with that.
