Cocoa butter, coconut oil, Bio-oil, Mederma, I could go on and on. None of them worked. The way my dr described it, I have thin skin that scars badly. Short of a miracle, nothing could truly prevent stretch marks.
However, he did say that using the oils and creams don't hurt to use. So I kept on using them anyways. I figured even if they don't prevent my tiger stripes, at the very least they can stop them from tearing and bleeding (which happened a few times). Also, I preferred Bio-Oil over butter. It absorbed faster and it kept my eczema away. Totally worth the cost.
I used/use bio-oil - didn't get any stretch marks on my belly which is where I used it religiously. I got heaps of stretch marks on my boobs and a few on my thighs because I didn't use it there - didn't expect the thigh marks and bio-oil gave me pimples in my cleavage so I stopped using it around there really quickly.
Having said that - my mum didn't get stretch marks during her pregnancies and I've heard that they're largely genetic so I may not have got them on my tummy anyway!
Bio-oil is expensive, but a little bit goes a really long way - I find 4 or 5 drops of it will cover my belly really well (although it's not very big yet!)
And I can vouch that it does make existing scars fade a bit. They haven't disappeared completely but they do dull down a lot and get a lot softer.
I used 100% shea butter my first pregnancy. Now that stuff is thick and greasy! lol I hated using it so I didn't really use it religiously. But I also never got a single stretch mark on my stomach. This time, I look like I have a mini sun around my belly button piercing hole that I haven't put a ring in, in over a year lol.
I will say though that my sister had horrible, dark stretch marks all over her stomach after her last child and she started using the palmer's. I was amazed at how well it worked to lighten her marks! They were the color of her skin after she used it for a while and barely noticeable.
I used bio-oil for the first half of my pregnancy but then just kinda gave up and starting using my regular body lotion instead. I didn't really like the oily feeling of bio-oil (although it's not thick or anything, just a bit greasy). Either way I am at 40 weeks now and no stretch marks, although I don't think the bio oil played a very big role in that.
