My cousin-in-law gave me a lifesaver tip to help with the middle of the night heartburn and acid reflux. She told me to keep Tums by my bedside and if I happened to wake up with it to stick a Tums in my mouth and just let it sit in my mouth and melt by itself and just fall back asleep. It worked like a miracle for me.

Oh god, I hate that. This has happened to me not pregnant. It's painful, you feel like your entire airway has been burned, and like you can't get any air.

Sleeping sitting slightly up should help. You should be able to do this even on bed rest. Try not to eat spicy or acidic food and try not to eat for a few hours before you sleep. Eating something spicy/acidic soon before bed is the worst culprit for me. You might keep a bottle of liquid Mylanta or chewable antacids by then bed.

Talk to your doctors about prescription zantac/prevacid. It will be more effective that the OTC.

It's different for everyone, but sometimes even things like WATER or not eating anything at all triggered the heartburn for me.

That said, chocolate is a common trigger. Even once I got on prescription meds that mostly cleared up my heartburn, I couldn't eat chocolate after 5 pm or I'd end up with reflux when I went to sleep.

What dose of zantac are you taking? I was okay on the 75mg pills for a while but eventually had to step it up to 150mg. And now I absolutely have to take it in the morning BEFORE I start having problems - if I wait til the heartburn stops it hardly helps at all.

gaviscon works for me sometimes, but it tastes horrible and sometimes that makes me puke (i can only get the liquid version though where i live)

my grandmother was the one who suggested drinking a coke to me. i was trying to not drink caffeine, but after getting desperate enough (and talking to my midwife about how one coke is really no big deal), i tried it out. my grandmother told me that back in the day, coke syrup was one of the best remedies for heartburn but unfortunately you cant find it anymore. anyway, i tried it, and it worked! has to be coke, not pepsi or anything else though.

besides that, have you tried yogurt or milk? plain yogurt with a little honey usually helps my heartburn too.

I had this problem for most of my third trimester. My doc put me on Protonix and it was like magic!
