I just got done reading Your Best Birth, and skin-to-skin contact is something they talk about too. In the book, it's mentioned that if for some reason the mother cannot provide it, the father can, because it's better than having no skin-to-skin contact

I'm really insistent on my husband having lots of skin to skin contact with our babybear. I'll have plenty of time to bond since I'm planning on breast feeding. I plan on doing it even when we are home. DH is looking forward to watching TV with our little one sleeping on his chest.
My one worry about doing it right after the birth is that I'm afraid I'll be to overwhelmed. From the people that I've talked to who've had children, it seems that the time that the nurses are washing and weighing the baby is vital time for you to collect yourself after several stressful hours of birth. We'll see though. My birth plan asks for me to have the baby and to breast feed right away after he is born.

If you're planning on being overwhelmed, you will be. I was actually very relaxed right after birth! I didn't feel overwhelmed or anything. My daughter latched on right away and then nurse ordered me some lunch and we had lunch together ;) She hung out on my bare chest while I ate my lunch and she took a little snooze. I put a bra on when my family came to visit, but we spend a lot of "nakey time" at the hospital!

I like to think that my daughter is pretty mellow and relaxed (and well behaved to boot! haha)

It's recommended here too - especially if the mother can't do skin to skin for some reason (in ICU/recovery etc post operation)... then they actually have lounge chairs set aside on the recovery ward for the men to sit with the babies in a quiet room and cuddle. Woot.

My hubby is looking forward to taking baby into the shower with him and showering him - I think it's a hilarious idea because bub will be slippery as heck, but hubby will learn this (hopefully first :P) and if it means we put baby in a onesie for a shower with dad so he's got some grip then so be it :)
